Cloning Cards....?

Hello,

just a couple of quick newbie question,

1) what is stopping us pirates (arrrr... ) of the DVB world just cloning access cards?

I'm guessing the good reason is that they have some kind of encryption on the cards themselves so you can't read the data with your card reader/writer... But i'm sure some more knowledgeable people will tell me why with more detail...

2) How do people find the monthly codes?

Do they read it from the cards? Or do they intercept/read the data sent to the CAM?

Any info welcome.
Thanks,

UT.

Well, I'm not an expert, but the smartcard was designed specifically to stop people from reading the sensitive data off of it.

Some cards have 'faulty' logic applied during the design, and these weaknesses have been exploited in the past. Most 'hacks' or whatever you want to call them are more likely to be scraps of information which are leaked from within the providers halls of power for cash or political reasons, and are used to prize the cards contents open. Whole swathes of code have been sold on before now.

That's not to say that heaps of useful info doesn't also come from logging and other analysis techniques...

:)
