Just saw this video so thought i'd share, ingenious idea as it's so simple. Would be so easy to make with F Types!
Can use a cheap actuator...

Wondering if RimaNTSS or Trust1 will build one..
 
That's a cracking idea, I remember as a kid when there was thunder and lightning my mum & dad would switch off the TV, pull the plug out from the wall & pull the coaxial cable from the TV as well. I have got to admit both my dishes are wall mounted and not even as high as the guttering and I have no aerial feed so I have been taking the risk even when at home.
 
Most lightning could jump that gap (in a flash).
 
Lightning goes where it wants to, I remember taking apart a computer at the shop where a lightning bolt had hit the customer's phoneline, travelled through the dial up modem, and the bolt went through a PCI sound card to the bottom of the case like it wasn't there, scary stuff...

Might not do that if you bolt a hefty cable from the fixed bracket to a proper grounding rod just outside the building - lightning current will follow the path of least resistance. Even better, run the cables through a similar bracket OUTSIDE the house before they come inside and connect the grounding lead to that - combined with the "quick disconnect" rig, that should mean that the lightning currents should not cause much (any?) damage inside the building.

My grandma would never touch any cutlery in the house during an electrical storm. Not sure where that superstition came from.

Probably would not (or at least "should not") have touched metal door handles, kitchen pots & pans, etc., (etc., etc.,....) either :-lmao

Sounds feasible. These ideas do pass down the generations, this one probably starting with Benjamin Franklin and his key on a kite...
 
My dad was a fireman and they had a few shouts to the aftermath of lightning strikes, the strangest one was a direct strike to a TV aerial, it jumped the gap from the coax behind the tv to a radiator and blew it off the wall. The TV was still working when they arrived.

That's a really novel idea and while it may not protect everything from a direct hit it will reduce the possibility of front end damage from nearby strikes. Some years ago with a storm a few miles away I started hearing a clicking noise from my radio room. Went in to find it was being produced by sparks jumping the gap across a PL259 that I'd unplugged from a radio, it wasn't even a large antenna, just a vertical dipole for 6m.

Seems to (if it was not "obvious") confirm that lightning energy takes the easiest/shortest route to "true" ground/earth - in other words, the "best" protection is to make sure that the energy is diverted to "ground" before it ever gets inside a building.
