Coax Terminations At LNB - Options ?

Hi,

Are there any better options for terminating the coax at the LNB other than twisting the braided copper shielding into a pigtail, screwing on the F connector and wrapping it in self amalgamating tape when screwed onto the LNB?

The downside of this method is that when placing 4 coax leads on a quad/quattro LNB it is not that easy to get good coverage with the self amalgamating tape on the inner 2 connections.

I recall reading somewhere that gel can be used, does this method form a hard weather resistant seal as the gel cures or is it just a water barrier same as a blob of silicone grease?

Yes, try a compression F connector with o-ring. No need for self amalgamating tape.
 
Well firstly twisting the braid into a pigtail is not the way to fit an "F" connector and not how the connector manufacturers recommend it is done, it's a throwback to the old Belling Lee connector procedures, just follow this guide. In the guide I had to remove the foil, but only because those connectors were a tight fit, with most compression and screw connectors this isn't necessary.

Some of the newer screw on "F" Connectors have "O" rings built in (ebay search for quality "F" connector), so if you have a quad with incorporated pull down cover, no further moistureproofing should be necessary. Otherwise do a search for cablecon self install, these are a tool less compression connectors which require no moistureproofing whatsoever.

Thanks for the heads up on the compression connectors.

Would you know if they will fit WF125 as well as WF100 or would that be a separate size compression connector, I have a mix of WF125 and WF100 coaxial cable going to the LNB and would prefer to keep the WF125 in place.

The Thomas n Betts compression connectors seem to get good feedback, are they the ones that you guys are using ?
 
You need to get the F connector to suit the cable; 1.0mm and 1.25mm.

Cabelcon are what I use and at late, the Triax compression with o-ring. You will need the correct tool for these unless you use the Cabelcon self-install. Both the 1.0mm and 1.25mm are available.
 
I had a large stock of T&B Snap'n'Seal connectors from the States, but now mainly use the Triax TX100 connectors, also Cabelcon CX3 for 0.65mm cables and sometimes the 1mm version. Also have a stock of the Cabelcon self install 1mm connectors, useful to have a couple in your pocket for the odd quick connector swap out.
 
Hi friends ..
I've never had any problems with the screw on F connectors providing I use a quality item ..the right diameter for the cable and a rubber O ring seal inside ..

The internal foil on WF100 ..I simply peel away ..turning the braid back on itself over the cable
I cut back the white centre ..leaving about 1/8th inch intact ..and screw the connector on until the white center just comes level with the rubber seal ..
Trim away excess braid and yer done..
Works for me ..

As to weatherproofing ..
If the lnb doesn't provide a pull down ..
I use the clip on covers witha gel insert ..
These make for easy removal ..and easy access ..and of course are reuseable many times ..
They totally enclose the exposed F connector and cable end .

...problem is ..Im not sure these are made any more ..
CPC ..used to stock 'em ..
..and I'm still using and re-using the ones I bought over 5 years ago.

Had forgotten about the gel covers VS, still got a few in the van, but as I now use compression connectors, haven't touched them for years.:) They are very effective protection though and in fact the new Fibre LNBs come with one to protect the optical connection.

..They certainly are very effective Rolf ..
Are they still available ?
Haven't seen them in a while ..but certainly glad I bought half a dozen back then ..
I use 'em mostly for the C band stuff ..as these lnbfs don't have any built in pull down covers of course..,

Thanks for all the replies and info.

Looking around for a source of the compression F connectors and a compression tool the auction site is mainly stuff from overseas such as the USA and China. Has anyone bought from overseas in smaller quantities of F connectors (50) or is there a reasonably priced UK outlet?
