My Satellite Setup
I have a Sky + box but can’t use it just like everyone else that uses a communal stat dish I don’t have a spare outlet unless I pay X amount
Computer just a Sony running Microsoft Explore on BT broadband

Hi all
Here’s my problem. We use a communal dish in a small block just 3 floors everything was working until the wife asked me to setup a DVD recorder, so out came all the instruction books and away we go ‘’
That’s when things all goes wrong. We have an outlet box on the wall SAT,TV,FM I don’t know how old the system is around 15years one guy in the block thinks
Anyway DVD Recorder out and back in box ‘Put it all back the way it was and since then sky just says (no satellite signal being received )I have been buying new cables for the Stat and the Arial just as it was before. Until the guy in the shop said it might be the box on the wall. Had a look and there is only ONE cable about 10-12mm thick with copper wire then copper shield like tin foil then the plastic cover and finally the thin copper wire should there not be TWO and how should it be installed

Welcome,

There should only be one cable. All signals are diplexed onto the one feed. The outlet plate acts as a filter and seperates the signals there after.

As for no signal, check cable connections to SAT are terminated correctly.

Meaning the F connectors on either end being fitted correctly and not been shorted out.

I don’t want to appear daft but is there a site I can go on and see how all the cables including the one in outlet plate are done correctly

I followed the instructions on the site you gave me which were spot on. The only thing it didn’t give was the cable to outlet box. this is what I did’ As I said it’s a cable I haven’t come across before like the coaxial but it has the copper foil as well. So I treated it just like the ordinary cable and removed all the copper and then just cut back the plastic to reveal the copper wire the outlet is by a company called Teleste I have been on the web site but can’t find our model’’ anyway have I done the cable ok or is this crap

Hi, just make sure the braid or screen is seperated from the centre core and correctly terminated onto the triplex plate. Should be straight forward enough. The downlead is double screened.

Hopefully I have terminated onto the triplex plate. If not would I still get a picture on the TV through the Arial? Because I have a good picture on the TV but still no signal on the Sat and as it’s a communal Sat I can’t get to it ‘’Maybe that’s not a bad thing actually

If you have a clean picture on the TV (terrestrial) then termination of the outlet plate will be ok.

It's either the satellite fly lead (cable from outlet plate to satellite receiver) or a fault developed with the box.

Best way to quickly isolate is to borrow a sky digibox or freesat receiver, plug it into the outlet and see :)

One little tip, regardless of what friends say, if something like an outlet plate was working yesterday, it is unlikely that the thing will be at fault today, removing it may just cause more problems. The fault will almost guaranteed be with the connections you have moved/re-made, so if you follow the guide on making your satellite patch cable, you should get things going again.
 
Hi All
My Sat comes from a communal dish in a 3 story block which means I can’t get Sky+. Unless I fit another cable .Can someone help and give me a list of the equipment I will need and some instructions. As a rule I would get a proper Sat lad in but moneys that tight that if I can’t do it myself it just won’t get done

Bit more than just a cable needed, unless you can locate a distribution unit with a spare feed on it.

Taking a feed direct from a communal dish is not advisable.
 
If you have a handy balcony facing the right way, you could bung a dish on that. Certainly a cheap way of doing it. A minidish from fle ebay would be cheap.

If I can get on the roof to the dish what will I be looking at ‘is it something on the dish or will it be a cable into a distribution box ‘what will I need if I can’t get someone to do it before Xmas

It is not possible to 'predict' the method that has been used. You must find what is distributing the satellite signal to all the flats and go from there.

You need to speak to the management company for the flats. You DO NOT want to start mucking around with the distribution system - you could cut off everybody in the flats! :D

The chances of getting it sorted before Christmas are remote.
 
!!! Also just to add, if the system is under a maintenance agreement with the orignal installation company or any, touching the dish or switch may invalidate this agreement.

I'd check first !!! :D
