I know this may sound basic - but I am new to this technology.

I have the socket shown in the picture which connects to a communal satellite. I have both an F-cable as shown in the picture. As you probably will know, they don't seem to match.

Do I need to buy one of these connectors http://www.amazon.co.uk/Screw-Connector-Socket-Aerial-Adapter/sim/B003OSUU14/2 or am I doing something wrong

Yes, one of those should do, although that is an odd choice of outlet, satellite connections are as standard a screw type "F" connector.

Indeed, very strange. I wonder whether the very cheapest solution of wall plate was chosen.

If it were me I would check both of the outlets (because I like to know!) to see if both supply satellite. Similarly, I would check both of the outlets to see if they supply the normal TV aerial signals to the TV.

This might be important later on if you upgrade to satellite PVR such as Freesat+ or $ly+ which need two satellite dish connections to perform at their best. If that were the case you could need a diplexer/splitter to supply the TV as well but come back and ask if that comes to pass.

That may be a socket to send the outgoing RF from the Sky box into another room.

No it is the main and only sat socket in the flat. I've asked my landlord, however I have been told a communal satellite is in place.

But have you seen it ?

It might be worth taking the plate off the wall and taking a - good - photo or two of what is behind, circuitry and cablewise.

Assuming the SAT socket is connected to the dish you are still going to be very limited. If you flat is on the south or east side of the building you might be able to discreetly install one of these (-http://goo.gl/OiaOvG). Assuming Dundee is not too far North!

It turned out that the socket was really for satellite. All I needed was one of the converters.
Thanks guys.

Did you check both sockets to see if they both supply satellite and/or TV?

I have now checked, the socket marked vhf/uhf doesn't return any signal. Wonder what is it for?

So you're saying radio channels wouldn't work without it? I doubt?

I think Martin means a feed to an FM radio. It sounds like you're talking about radio channels on your satellite box. Different things.
