Hi everyone. I've been reading through threads for the last couple of days and i'm getting rather confused. I've know a bloke at work, he has all the gear you lot have, 3 dishes 6 receivers bla bla bla. Anyway, I've been watching footy (Liverpool) online for the last 6 years or so, and unless i've been at work have watched every liverpool match live. Over the last couple of years i've been chatting to him about it all, you know what channels he gets and that i'd be able to watch every liverpool match on my tv instead of over the internet. What i'm confused about is that he's always told me that you can get bucket loads of channels and lots are in English, and that i'd be able to get probably every Liverpool match also, and yet on these forums i've been seeing threads saying

19E and 13E are just about shut out now, and theres not much English language content in the clear.

1W will go black soon, so you can forget free movies/sport on there in a couple of months.

If you are looking for an alternative to sky then you need to be looking at a foreign subscription package - and if you need to buy one in the UK its going to be FAR more expensive than a sky subs.

If you want shed loads of English language entertainment and sports action then stick to sky, unless you want to spend a LOT of money.


There's lots more also. Bloke at works saying i'd be able to watch every Liverpool match, and yet on here i'm basically hearing the opposite. I don't know what to think, mate at works been doing it for years, and yet you lot also seem to have a lot of experience in the field.

Can anyone shed any light on whether i would or wouldn't be able to watch footy, after all I wouldn't like to waste 5-600 quid if its going to be for nothing.
 
Precisely as it says above, you can get most matches at the moment, for example, Sunday's match is on C+ Sport 2 on 1 West (and probably more channels to follow), but in a couple of months that satellite will be black to hobbyists.

If you are not really interested in the hobby side of it and are looking for assurances that the equipment expenditure is worth it and that you will get an uninterrupted flow of live football without paying any subscriptions, then don't do it and stick with watching on your PC.:)
 
He did say every now and again, as you put it, satellites go black. Don't get me wrong i'm not expecting everything to be perfect, he's made me well aware that channels come and go all the time.
Ever since I started talking to him about it i've always fancied taking it up as a hobby. I play golf at the moment so am thinking about jacking it in as its getting to much hard work.
So I think I'll stick around, I've got plenty of time anyway. The wife won't let me buy a system outright so i'll be buying it bit by bit between now and August, so I can everything in place by the start of next season.
I hope you don't mind, but no doubt i'll be asking some dumb questions in the coming months.
 
i would love to be able to tell you that you will get uninterupted football all the time on many channels.

realistically, you will have periods where you miss matches because encryption changes virtually daily!!... by the same token you will have times when you enjoy free Liverpool games :)

however it must be said, the times without football seem to be growing at the moment :(

if you dont have equipement, then i would agree with Rolf and say put it on the backburner and carry on watching online.
anyone else reading this who has already bought the equipment... then keep firmware, cams and keys up to date and hope things get better.

as for the comment about the overseas subscriptions being more expensive than sky?? complete rubbish. ART are back on the scene and you can get a Sports subscription for about £92 for the year!!! if you got that you would see nearly all Liverpool games... but NOT 3pm KO saturday.

You will be made very welcome to the hobby if you decide to "join us" Ian. Ask away - we were all beginners once :)

Remember you dont needs loads of expensive brand new kit - many of us started with second hand equipment, and have upgraded over the years. Even today a good two thirds of my kit is second hand / salvaged / donated.

I get my dishes out of skips / from friends / workmates / off the side of the road. My first satellite receiver was an unwanted analogue cast off made redundant when my parents upgraded to Sky digital 10 years ago.

If it works its good enough, and I have great fun seeing just how far I can push my dilapidated dish collection in getting new satellites and channels.
