What is the official terminology for it ?20181108_113624.webp20181108_113635.webp

I thing that it is am SMA connetor though I have no idea what |SMA stands for.

SMA is threaded, and slightly larger. This has a push fit system with a clamping arrangement very much like the fastfit F-connectors. Outside diameter of the female connector is 3.2mm (+/- 0.1mm), SMA would be around 6mm.

Adapters arrived a minute ago., so I can bolt some external kit to the dongle.20181117_121637.webp

Bear in mind it doesn't take a lot of BII to overload them a notch filter for the band is often advantageous.

The discone I have will hopefully raise the signal somewhat higher than the background noise. Will try tonight if there is a pass as I've just run a new aircored cable down from the roof for this specific job.

You should also use a USB extension cable, the dongle has a tendency to rock out when the cable is stressed.

I used about a 3 footer, this gave me room for mounting it on a heat-sink, and also for adding ferrite beads and shielding as thes things create some RF noise themselves.

It sits on a weighted extension, courtesy of an old style desktop connection antenna from a few years back.

Todays experimentation hasn't gone well though. Not sure what is going on signal was a good 15dB above the noise level all the way though apart from a couple of minor interruptions

I'll try the NooElec tomorrow when there is a decent pass.Nov17 Noaa15.webp

What was the audio level output???? If too low it will look like that.

I find that it needs to be around 50% or better.

Ah. Im having to change from speaker audio to the virtual vbcable in order to commence scanning otherwise I get nothing.

Will check levels.
