According to news reports the satellites are lost, and are not sure if the rocket fell back to earth..

If the payload is still attached to the final stage rocket then mission control has the option of igniting the remaining fuel one last time to send everything into a safe trajectory or down to earth.

The coverage was a joke.

I watched it from when the stream went live on youtube at around 21:15 (later than it was intended too).

Anyway at one point it showed the rocket at around 600,000ft then you could see it dropping and dropping and then it remained around 244,000ft for the rest of the coverage.

So did it even really make it into orbit, or did it just fall back to earth (bottom of the ocean) ?

Pretty much. It looks like a fuel leak to me, the Liquid Oxygen was being depleted way faster than the fuel.

I have to agree with cokeaddict. The coverage was dreadful. Probably one of the worst Ive ever seen. It was quite obvious something was up when the speed went to zero & the altitude froze at 244000ft after a steep descent. Which was about 20 minutes before the mission failure announcement Even allowing for breaks in the telemetry as it went in & out of range of ground stations it should have changed after a few minutes.

It made it into space but it wont have made it into orbit - Im pretty certain the final analysis will say the satellites crashed into the Atlantic.
