Take one standard drinks mug.

Put a generous dessert spoon of honey into it, and fill with boiling water.

Add the juice from a fresh lemon.

Take a piece of fresh ginger, peel it and grate it into the hot water.

(Ginger to taste - we find a piece about the size of the top joint of your thumb is plenty but we like ginger)

This is the base recipe but add half a cap of whisky / brandy if you so desire.

Dead simple to make and remarkably effective :)

(Adapted from a recipe seen on the NHK World show "Venetia in Kyoto")

Will have to try that. I thought last year was bad for colds and chest infections. I'm doing well this year. What i thought was a bad case of man flu ended up being pneumonia. I haven't been to work for over 3 weeks. I'm getting really board now and just want to go back in to work

Ah interesting remedy. Mine is a pint glass of hot milk, some honey, small knob of butter (unsalted) and a tablespoon of whisky. I know it sounds weird but I love it and it does help.

....the more whisky, the better the effect! :D

I have a winter cold treatment that works ...
Lock yourself indoors ...and don't answer it to anyone if at all possible ..till spring.
If anyone develops a 'Lorenzos Oil' type cure for MS ..I'd be real interested to hear it..
..and maybe then I'd venture outside.

Once had a girl helper here from California who offered to cook us pasta with her 'special' sauce. She peeled and chopped 50 cloves of garlic to go with the pasta...It wasn't really very palatable and I said to her afterwards, "Not the sort of thing you'd want to have before a blind date"......

In the winter I usually make up a large pot of homemade thick soup each week to dip into every now and then. I just chop up some fresh veg, (carrots, potatoes, savoy cabbage, leeks, swede etc) boil them and add some meat stock (whatever I've got) fresh chillies, ground pepper, whatever left over cooked meat is in the fridge, maybe some rice or noodles, maybe some garlic or ginger and leave it to simmer for 30/40 mins. Basically there is no set recipe it's all to taste, I just use what I've got, always plenty of fresh chilli though, the heat warms you through and helps to sweat out any colds/sniffles. Works for me.:D

Any woman who is not shy about their garlic use is a respectable woman in my books... :D

Shame she was from california though.......

Bringing back to the top, since I only have ginger wine in the cupboard ( a rarity indeed to have whisky /whiskey of any type), this saves on the buying of ginger as well.

Of course I couldn't possibly condone drinking it neat, but I've had a cold for almost a week that shows no signs of going away, and to go downstairs and seek out the honey or the lemon outweighs the advantages....

Not only does it help with colds, it also helps with taking the mind too... ^_^

Ive also tried the original recipe using limes instead of lemon - that works quite well and adds a zesty zing to the taste :D

I always did prefer limes over lemons, and there are a few marmalade recipes making use of lime, ginger and grapefruit instead of the usual suspects.
