Couldn't resist a new dish

TBH I'm thinking of going back to the 1224. The polar mount is more stable, but the 1224 is faster and counts in smaller increments. Also count is linear wherever you are in the arc. Or maybe I'll start using my 1.8m now I don't need it for 28E.
 
I must say, I love my 1224. Very quick, accurate and pretty stable. Will be interesting to see how it handles the Gibby.
 
Moved the mount to a slightly more sheltered location - the final place for the Gibby - so it's behind the trees for the neighbours overlooking our garden. With leaves and green paint on the back of the dish, it won't be seen.

Sun behind 26E now - you can see how crap my eastern view is :(

Hi CJ its a shame the dish is not on a two metre pole like I have it just gives you that extra clearance from opposite fence.
 
Can you post a picture of your dish pole (in case any smart-arses on here get the wrong idea) and how it's fixed etc.?

Another problem I have is that if the dish is any higher, it will be seen from the road as well.

Yes, Martin, I thought about it but, to be honest, I am not missing much. The only satellite that is in complete blackout between 45W and 45E is BADR-4. The others are strong enough to come through even with partial illumination. It's not letting me do fringe reception hunting east of 10E but... as VS says... c'est la vie...

In any case, my Fibo at my parents has a clear view between around 47E (though I can just about receive 53E) and 37.5W - and this is the one used for hunting.
 
Took some metal bits to the local place to be cut, drilled and hot dip galvanised. I could do the cutting and drilling myself but without a power saw, it's very difficult to cut through 5mm thick steel with the hacksaw. Maybe I should invest in one....
 
I bought an angle grinder CJ, but I hope my fabricator lets me have use of his work shop to get everything cut to size and just let him weld it.
 
Nice dish and bargain price. I'm sure I have the 1224 adaptor brackets here somewhere, from when I had my Gibby 1.5.

Any nice satellites I should be expected to get on a dish this size around Bristol? Thinking some difficult 7W transponders, 4W or SES-5 @ 5E?

Progress! Got my metal bits back, all cut to size and galvanised. Shame the galvanisation process made the drilled holes smaller and M8 bolts wouldn't fit. I had to drill through them again, so will have to rust proof those holes again. Also, marked some holes in the wrong place and had to drill new ones... oh well.

RimaNTSS, you'll be happy to know that all nuts and bolts are stainless steel/INOX :)

Anyway, here's the result with the bits attached to the dish bracket, which attaches to the dish. The spherical joints at the bottom are for declination adjustment and the bar at the top will have an actuator jack doing the actual movement.

Really hope the spherical joints will hold the dish steady and not let it move side-to-side/skew-wise.

Thoughts?

All parts, except dish itself, could be INOX made and TIG welded :D. However, it looks SO great..... perhaps only INOX nuts&bolts will be enough to call your product state of the art :-applause
 
I want to start putting things together this weekend but time is tight... Depends on the weather really. I am on holiday for 10 days from 29th March so nothing will be done then.
 
Ok... Made a start but some minor design changes required for the declination jack. I need to make the pivot point vertical rather than horizontal due to lack of clearance. Even with spacers it's a bit awkward. But not a big job. Just need a couple of angle iron cut offs, which I already have galvanised.

Strangely, the wife didn't even ask what I was doing....

That -type of -motor really needs to be in constant compression.
