Crippled Dreambox - Help

Hi all.

My local pub has a Dreambox system that has been crippled. They pay a company £100 a month to recieve sat TV but this setup is reliant on the pubs broadband connection being up. Lose the broadband and you lose the ability to recieve sat TV. (I suspect the Dreambox is sending out a keepalive signal to a server in order to keep the system descambling the channels.)

Guess what? The broadband connection is down and won't be fixed until after Xmas according to BT.

Is there any way I can load a different softcam to pick up the football tonight? I'm not that familiar with dreamboxes but I can find my way around if I'm given an idiots guide. The match we want to watch is Newcastle vs Chelsea and it's available on severla different channels.

Any kind souls out there can help me load a different softcam into the system? Or tell me what questions to ask to help you to help me?

your pub is actually using the wan-cardsharing possibilities of the dreambox, which is ILLEGAL.
and at a price of 100 £ a month, they're getting ripped off at the same time.
why don't they just buy themselves a proper SKY subscription, there is no problem with getting this to work on a dreambox, or are they decrypting some obscure foreign sport channels ?
 
It's a small village pub. Sky want to charge £1600 a month to allow them to show the footie. There's no way that this pub can afford that.

I know that they're being ripped off but at least it's better than Sky ripping them off.

And yes, we do want to decrypt obscure channles to get the Newcastle matches. Thats pretty much all we want - just the Newcastle matches and they're show all over the place. Principally the ARTS network and Al Jazeera Sports.

like it or not, but wan-cardsharing is still illegal.
but I'm not sure I understand this : why would SKY charge a pub £1600 a month for any subscription ?
I can understand that a pub would have to pay some extra taxes or so, but surely they won't have to pay this to SKY ? It's your local tax receiver or something which would collect this tax.
Anyhow, does anybody have a valid SKY subscribtion card for the channel you want to watch ? Just pop it into the dreambox, and select CCcam as softcan (NO CARDSERVER !), and you'll be able to watch. No need for a box-id with CCcam, and SKY will never know.
 
Why don't they buy an ART sports card for £50 for 6 months viewing?

Our pub is rateable band P (110K-125K). So Sky charge the pub £1540 a month for the right to show Sky in the pub - plus VAT at 17.5%. And all of it goes to SKY. SKY pass the VAT on to the tax people but keep the £1540

Thats why the pub can't afford it.

But your suggestion about using a valid SKY card sound as if it might work - at least for tonights match.

SKY's outrageous charges are one of the reasons that more and more pubs are moving over to Dreambox systems and using foriegn cards to recieve and decrypt the channels. This is a grey area in law in the UK. SKY say what we are doing is illegal and only they have the right to charge us for watching football. The dreambox people say that as long as we pay the subscription to a foriegn company (at least EEC) what we're doing is legal as we're just buying services from a fellow EEC member as guaranteed by the Treaty Of Rome.

There has been several court cases so far and SKY (who have the monopoly over here) haven't one one - yet.

So, it's back to trying to make this dam dreambox to work so we can get the football tonight. And thanks for the SKY card comment, I'll give that a go. I'm very much a neophyte when it comes to the Dreambox but it's only a computer so I'll make the thing do what I want....

I'm still learning what these things can do but, so far, I'm super impressed.

Now whats all this buisness about softcams, decoders and getting free sat TV?

sorry to be a spoilsport, but how are you going to install the CCcam softcam if you don't have an internet connection ?
let's hope it has allready been downloaded into your gemini image. And don't forget : put the sky card in with the chip facing downwards. then select CCcam as your softcam and give the dreambox a restart just to be on the safe side. Start on a FTA channel (any BBC will do), then move to a FTV channel (like sky one), and if all is well go to the Sky Sport channel you want to watch. Hope you can work things out for tonight !

You should also realise that this setup is also dependant on the commercial c/s company staying open. They pay tv operators are gunning for the commercial operations, so dont be surprised if they get taken off air at some point....
 
As already suggested Art card is the way to go.
