JUNE 11, 2015 DIGITAL RADIO

A number of changes are happening to the DAB digital radio service during the summer, including the addition of temporary summer 'pop-up' stations in three locations on DAB and a reshuffle of services in Yorkshire.

Here's a guide to the main changes across the UK:

National
TeamRock ends transmission on national DAB at the end of June. The station will continue to be distributed via online platforms. A replacement service using TeamRock's bandwidth is due by September.

London
French Radio London ends transmission on London DAB on 25th June 2015. The station will continue to be distributed via online platforms.

Dab is the new Medium Wave gone are the 128 to 160 kbps Stereo stations only BBC Radio 3 Broadcasts in 192kbps in MP2
Classic FM is now in 128kbps down from 160
The majority of music channels are in 64 to 80kbps Mono
For example:-
Absolute Radio 80kbps mono D1 National
Absolute Radio 112kbps Stereo London-1
Absolute 70's 64kbps mono London-2
Absolute 80's 80kbps mono D1 National
Absolute 90's 80kbps mono London-1
Absolute Classic Rock 64kbps mono London-3

Not even Dab+ or Dab2 as some call it will save UK radio sound quality as the broadcasters will just add more radio stations at 48kbps mono :-rofl2

Mmmmm, quality.

Please dont cut n paste entire articles from other sites - it causes bad feelings & robs them of their advertising revenue. We have also had legal threats in the past from sites about swiping content.

A couple of paragraphs is fine and post the link - then if folk are interested they can go and read it on the original site.

The exception is press releases from places like SES - those are fine to post in their entirety..

What's the point of DAB? I know you can cram eleventy million radio stations on but ...in 80kbps mono? Reminds me of RealMedia type streaming back in 56kbps modem days. It's digital TV all over again where quantity is at the great expense of quality.

I've told you a billion times not to exagerate, the total DAB capaity from memory is just under 150 stations (in the UK)

Like I said, plenty of room in the race for the bottom.

plenty of room in the race for the bottom.

My bottom makes better sounds than anything on DAB, perhaps I should broadcast that...... :-rofl2

No but I have improved my reception by converting my Band II FM/VHF aerial to a Band III Dab/VHF aerial via the aid of a hacksaw drill & plans from the Internet :)
