Howard Keel - who played tough guy Clayton Farlow in Dallas - has died aged 85.

The actor lost his battle with cancer of the colon on Sunday.

Keel appeared in a series of big MGM musicals in the 1940s and 1950s.

But he is probably best known for his role in the hugely successful 80s soap about oil, greed and lust.

He became a household name at the age of 66 - just as he was winding down his career - when he took the role of Farlow in 1981.

Farlow, whose character married 'Miss Ellie' Ewing, stayed with the soap until it's demise in 1991.

Later he said: "Dallas was enoromous. I couldn't believe it. My life changed again. From being out of it I was suddenly a star.

"I was known to more people than ever before. Wherever I went crowds appeared again."

Ironically, his death was announced hours before last night's Dallas Reunion: The Return to Southfork aired on CBS in the US, although Keel did not appear in it.
