Having bought a BluRay player this week, which plays not only Blu content, but DVDs and CDs (and I assume DivX etc from the spec sheet) but has no ability (atm) to play other regions outside the UK, the following question arises.

Just how many formats have there been, and are currently running when it comes to burning stuff onto a cd, or DVD disk ?

I know I have a couple of DVD HD disks here which will probably never be watched in their original format, and VCD was popular a few years back.

More importantly, how does one know what is on a disk when it is clear to see there is info written on it, but cannot be recognised by the player ?

There is of course the Apple stuff as well, plus the various conversions one can make with a PC editing bit of software, and VLC does it's best to play anything compatible.
Does Linux, or any other standard write content uniquely to disks ?
 
Of course I should have specified 'optical' discs, more specifically, those normally the size of the CD (12cms).
