Disecq question

Guys,

I am preparing to visit my brother to finish his satellite installation and I just wanted to check my understanding before I order the necessary part (as I have been twice previously and failed to finish the job due to bad preparation).

He has a dish with 4 lnbs feeding a diseqc switch mounted behind the dish. There is then a long to the house, and the single cable goes through the house to the front lounge (ie no chance of a new cable run). In the lounge there is a Sky minidish feed which I wish to link with the cable carrying the 4 LNBs as he has a receiver with a single tuner.

Am I correct in thinking that I need a Diseqc 1.1 switch to bring the two together? Also, does it matter what is at the far end, mounted on the dish as my understanding is that only needs to support 1.0?

Hi Xav,

yes I believe that to be correct, an uncommitted switch is needed to switch between the two. Not used one myself, but there's and old thread here where switches were cascaded

Yes the other end only needs to be diseqc 1.0

Hi, As robbo says you need an uncomitted Diseqc. But be aware that not all recievers support them.

If yours does, run the cable from the existing diseqc into port 1 of the Uncomitted, and the Sly dish into port 2. Then setup is then dependant on the reciever, but basically as follows

LNB1 - Uncomitted 1 - Comitted A
LNB2 - Uncomitted 1 - Comitted B
LNB3 - Uncomitted 1 - Comitted C
LNB4 - Uncomitted 1 - Comitted D
LNB5 - Uncomitted 2 - None (sky dish. If no option for none use Comitted A)

Make sure that the order the commands are sent is Uncommitted/Committed. If it's the other way around it won't work, and you may also have to set the reciever to repeat the commands. It really depends on how fast your uncommitted switch responds to commands.

The EMP Centari are brilliant switches. Spaun are also good. I don't have experience of any others.

Or check B & Q; I have seen a 6-way switch there before which will avoid this committed/uncommitted (like a bachelor!) palaver.

Many thanks for confirming guys. Now to find a reasonable value uk stockist of an uncommitted 2x1 switch. Agree about the EMP Centauri - currently using one of their 8x1 switches with my setup (which Robbo kindly expanded at the weekend!).

Bigtee - sadly not an option as the two dishes are at other ends of the house with a single cable spanning the locations.
