Dish and Motor types

80cm Motorised system. Samsung reciever. Sky HD
My Location
Birminham west midlands
Ok think I am settled as to type of LNB Inverto black ultra universal twin.

Now for an 80cm to 85cm dish what is a good brand and realistic price to pay for a motor......Would the same type of motor be suaitable for either size of dish.......

Dish type I have seen Technisat satman 85cm around £56 minus lnb. Any other dish only recommendations please.......Either size........
 
Fracarro Penta 85cm, a professional dish that will perform. They come in dark grey, light or red brick. Most DiSEqC motors will drive upto a 120cm, although a light weight 100cm is a more realistic maximum. Costing, around £50.
 
HIrschmann 85cm aluminium are good, but may be pricey.

The motors will fit and 80 or an 85cm.

Realistic price to pay for a motor is £45 to £60. STAB are dearer.
 
Questions about dishes. With regard to dish size....Would a 100cm dish motorised system be more prone to breakdown than a 80cm system on account of the extra weight and work the motor has to do....

Not sure if a 100cm would be worth while in the Midlands pulling in extra what!!!!! FTA.

According to wotsat the Badr sat requires a 100 to 120 cm. Not sure if 100cm in the Midlands would be adequate.......Seems most channels are in Arabic anything worthwhile on there to go after.......

Eutelsat W3A is rated as between 70cm to 100cm........Anything worth while on that sat to go after.......

Also with regard to the transparent type dishes 80cm range are these as goog as a solid dishes for picking up channels.....

Any opinions please........

On my old reciever stuck on 13deg I get 400 plus FTA channels and an awful lot of channel names that don't seem to be encrypted but just get the message "searching for signal"..Would these be channels that have moved frequencies....!!!!!!!

Badr 4 MBC can be worth a look. Most of the movie channels are in English.

Regarding a 100cm Vs 80cm dish and the likelihood of a breakdown. That will depend on the motor type, fixing, installation along with other factors. An 80cm on a DiSEqC motor could last longer than a 100cm mainly due to motor wear. However, if correctly installed and regularly maintained [especially in the case 36v systems], the rig should last.

I install a polar mount with my 100cm/120cm dishes if exposed.
 
Thank's. Would a 100cm dish be sufficient for the Badr satellite here in the westmidlands Birmigham region.......120cm technically requires planning permision and also don't really want to see a dish 120cm.
 
Can be received on a 90cm for the majority of the South and Mids, however it's down to dish quality / performance. I'm not sure of your exact location but I had a very acceptable BADR 4 reception here [NN] on an 85cm, where as I've installed less expensive / lower grade 100cm dishes [supplied by customers] and did not get a sniff. A decent LNb would also help pull in weaker sats.
 
I am about 4 miles north of Birmingham city centre if that helps.......I see a number of large fixed dishes where I live. Not sure they look to be 120cm......Don't know what they are pointing at. Asian household it appears have them......
 
The larger the dish the more wind loading, and in an exposed location, the more likely it is to get blown round a bit when wind is very strong. Had my 1m dish on a diseqc for a couple of years now, still OK unexposed. I would imagine it would wear the motor out a little quicker.
 
Mmmm. Thank's. Had not thought about potential wind force problems.....I do get some strong cross winds at times.

Ok. Assuming I stay within the 80 to 85cm range can you say if the cosmetic transparent dishes are less efficient at picking up channels than the solid ones. They are quite expensive but would be nice to try and improve the rather unsightly system I have at present.

Having said that performance is my main concern which will win over cosmetics any day.....

Evenfull afternoon today......Decided to dig out of storage my old Pace positioner for one last try to get the dish moving.......Last time tried would not move dish........

Wired it crude 4 wires stuck into rear of unit......Hey presto the dish moved.....To what position no idea as I had then lost my channels on 13deg. So i thought why not try the stored position for Astra 1.....Dish moved again so I set my reciever on scan but no signal was present even though it scanned.......No channels found.......

Messing about with the Pace positioner remote I played with east/west bottons while still scanning 19deg hey presto I got a signal......Did a rescan and found over 500 channels but the picture was breaking up. Inched the dish a little further east. At last now I have over 700 channels and picture normal. About 8 frequencies however would not give a signal.

Just settled down to nose through the channels and the phone rang.....It was an installer telling me ho could come this afternoon to give me an assessment. Fine I said.....

He arrives and does some work on the positioner settings and he said dish moving fine.......He takes a look at the set up outside and say's I don't need to change the dish. LNB is working fine motor working fine. I'll set up and store the positions on the Pace.....

Which he did. He said if I were you use unti it goes wrong. In the mean time with a new reciever you can get an adaptor to change the voltage to 36v between new reciever and the reed motor you have.

He must have been with me a couple of hours and just as we were about to to a final check on the work he had done storing the dish positions.......Disaster struck. My Samsung receiver just clapped out no power for more than a couple seconds.....

The only test on my equipment he could do then was to move the dish to Freesat.........Which it did ok. Have been testing on the TV and the dish is moving and returning back to Freesat ok...

But I am now receiverless........Ah well you can't have everything.. :eek:

He seemed an honest bloke he did not try to sell me anything I don't need.......

Probably will eventually discard the positioner and have a modern setup
 
yes you can retire the positioner and use a vbox linked to any new receiver you buy and storing the sats is easy just move dish east/west with diseqc 1.2 and then store.

I use one with my receiver and it works great.
