Dish Install for 28.2 Astra in Northen Ireland Problems

HI,

I'm trying to Install a dish on my house to pick up freesat channels. I was getting somewhere when I picked up a satellite on the meter.

After a scan I found it was the wrong satellite I was pointing to (think it was 19.2 looking at channel list on-line).

When trying to adjust it after reading a post here I have now lost everything and meter not picking up any signal.

I have the following satellite which I got off ebay and using the meter below as well.

On the satellite there are degrees on the bracket which I guess represent the dish elevation but it seems it starts at 30 degrees and looking on a dishpointer site it tells me it should be 19.9 degrees.

Can anyone tell me which degree I should point this to and then I presume its a matter of slowing turning the dish left and right to get the signal back.

Welcome to the Forum.

Well, those meters are ok apart from the short cable stub they come supplied with. The cable is so flimsy that the inner core can break, get displaced (and cause a short-circuit when screwed onto the LNB) or just fail to make contact at all.

I recommend you make another one up with a piece of proper cable and two F Connectors.
 
As for alignment, ignore the elevation markings as they are not deadly accurate - and even if they were, they don't take into account mechanical errors in eg mount verticality and clamps.

Set the dish face to roughly vertical by eye then pan around in azimuth until you find a Satellite - once you've checked which one it is, you can then move the dish the right way.

Don't forget, if you find 19E, not only do you have to move a few degrees further East, but you'll also need to reduce the elevation a degree or two.
 
Thanks, will try this when I get home. So as long as I am roughly vertical by eye I should pick up a satellite when I pan around then. What setting should have have the meter to when first detecting a dish? it recommends 5 I think and then work down.

I can bear the screeching for no more than a minute or two at a time.
 
Thanks again, I found on searching the web as well that a compass may help me find the satellite do I just find 28.2 degree east of south on compass and point the arm of the satellite that direction?
 
Nope. Forget the compass ............... 28.2E doesn't directly translate to a bearing: It depends upon where you are and upon all sorts of geomagnetic phenomena.

But if you can't recall roughly where you found 19E, then try our Forum links to the excellent Dishpointer application.

But worry not, it's a simple task - as evidence by the fact you found a Satellite before.You're not the first by a long chalk to find 19e in the first instance.
 
right so compass no good at all or can we use it to see the general direction.

By the way, the Elevation from Dishpointer being 19.8 deg, if you take into account the offset angle of the LNB arm (around 24 deg or so normally), you'll see that the dish face need to be about 4 deg depressed from - hence the earlier advice to start with it roughly vertical by eye. You should certainly find 19E like that and then 28E will be a doddle.


I suggest you just give it a go - too much prior information can be counterproductive.


The hardest bit will be getting a new cable stub made up for the meter to make sure it connects properly.
 
Right okay here we go...On the elevation bracket of the triax dish on the left hand side there is a scale of 10° to 40° use this scale to set up the elevation of the dish.. Then from your due south position slowly move the dish as your looking at it with south at your back to the left and you will get 28.2°e.
