Dish protection from birds.

Inspired from seeing the post/pics of 'scopus' and others in this thread:- H to H to SSS Polar Mount

I have applied the same to the one 1.8m PF I use for feed/fringe hunting....will do the other 1.8m soon!

Very pleased with the outcome but ironic that nearly all of us in actual fact call a satellite a 'BIRD'. :D:D

I can certainly see the need in exceptional circumstances however surely they will just land on the arms or lnb instead?

Just a thought, can the size of the wire act as an aerial, for things like the ber issues me and vipersan had?

My Satellite Setup
OpenBox X5 on a 1 meter motorized dish.
And now a 10 foot "C" band dish.

Custom built PC
My Location
Deep in the Boonies in the central Sierra Nevada mountains of California.
We just put a fiberglass frame and fiberglass window screen over the whole dish, or install a radome, if you can find some thin fiberglass tent poles you can make a nice frame out of them.

But bird poop does not affect the signals.

A big bird sitting on the LNB may.

But keeping that nice white dish so clean must be a job.

Only if the wire is a even wavelength of the incoming signal, here is a frequency to wavelength calculator, if the wire is an even wavelength long, (1/4, 1/2, 3/4, full) it could have some impact on the signals.
Code:
http://www.wavelengthcalculator.com/

Example:

A signal at 11750 MHz has a full wavelength of 25.5 MM, divide by 2 or 4 for the 1/2 or 1/4 wavelength, if those wires are at or close to that size it could have some type of effect, or maybe not.

I have in the past run into what is called "Hardware modulation" this is where a piece of strut, wire support, tie rod or arm is of the right length, this could cause it to resonate at that frequency and cause problems, it mostly happens in transmitter sites, but has happened in receive only applications.

If you see any type of effect can you ground the wire strips??

I don't have any strips on my dish, it was a thought that sprung to mind?

Just use the plastic icicles you find around the store for Xmas trees, a little RTV silicone sticky stuff to attach them to the dish and your set.

On the west coast at some CATV head ends we have a problem with sea gulls, since the dishes and LNB supports are all fiberglass (so they don't rust) we used the solar powered electric fence charger and tape, one tape for the charger, one tape for ground, they learn very fast to keep off the dishes.

You have to warn the jr. engineers also as they tend to forget.

Cats can't climb dishes, the only thing I have seen that can climb up on a dish is a lizard.

Now I have seen some lizards that are big enough to eat a sea gull but it would cause the same problem,....Pulling the LNB off center.

I have had these spikes for number of years, and they don't seem to land on the LNB arms.

O yes, they can! View attachment 86618 They also can do terrestrial View attachment 86619
OK I retract that.

And my problems with birds are the wood peckers, they have punched holes into the LNB eye cover to put acorns in for the winter, I have gone through two Invacom LNB's due to water damage to the internals.

LNB problem 1B.jpg

I fixed this problem by gluing a piece of bullet proof polycarb over the eye, bends their little beaks and they don't come back.
