After having read everying there is on dish set up over and over Im now unsure if I have set my dish up correctly or not.

Heres what I did ......Brackets, dish, pole motor all ok and understood. Right so I point my dish due South set my receiver to usals having inputed my lat' and long' figures. Move the motor to 1W and find BBC world.......Or do I? this is the bit Im not sure about. bearing in mind that Im at 0.8deg W do I set 1W as 0 deg? Reading everything it looks to me that I should but then to do that I would have to stop the motor turning to 1W so that doesnt work either, in Diseqc yes but usals no.

Could anyone please clarify exactly what Im supposed to do?

Perfect situation.

Set the motor to zero/ reference position.
Align straight to Thor 0.8W, you'll be bang on the arc.

When you input your longitude/Latitude into USALS and select Thor, the dish will not move as your already at 0.8w

OK so from what your saying thats exactly the same saying set to zero, set up the receiver move to 1W and set up the sat. Which is what I did/do. LOL I think Im trying to make it more complicated than it is but Im still struggling on 16E but Im now thinking I need to replace the DM500. Thanks anyway.

Shouldn't have a problem with 16e on a Penta85 in Surrey.

Yep well you have said this before, this is why Im thinking its the DM500. Ive just done a sweep of some of the sats on 1W BBC world I get around 90% SNR and 90% AGC generally I get around 80 to 90% on most of the sats across the arc currently watching 42E 11830V with 88% SNR and 99% BER. West isnt bad either on 43W I get dark in at 80% and 80% but thats not enough to pull in a solid picture but a bit of tweeking will probably solve that.

One 16 E I can only get 11140H at 66% and 86% 11441H comes in at 80 and 88% but with BER so again no solid picture. But I do get 11303V with78% and 85% so again Im thinking its due to the DM500.

Im currently using a Best .1 LNB as that seams to perform best for me but I now have quite a collection including the MTI highline and the inverto, they all act differently but only by 1 or 2 % and i need more than that with 16E. My other receiver is an old TM5500ci which has an equally poor tuner so not a lot of use.

In the end 16E is not the end of the world but it would be nice to have.

11.449h 92% qual on Technomate and 10.956h qual of 87%.

My old Techy 10957= 32 qual (and a good picture) and 11449 = 35 qual (very broken unwatchable picture)

My DM500 : 10957 SNR 78% AGC = 99% and 11449 SNR = 80% AGC =89% No difference in picture quality between the DM500 and the Techy. I still think its a tuner issue.

32% quality on a TM with a Penta; you have a problem somewhere possible alignment issue.

Ok well Il have another look but Im not too hopefull. I know Rolfw mentioned needing to nudge the dish a bit to get 16E. I tried that last time and whilst I did get some of the stronger TP's I lost 1W. Im in a better position this time round though as I have something to start with.

I meant nudge the dish East or West on the arc by using the manual motor controls, as sometimes USALS is not as accurate as it could be.

...and that will be the blue POS button for the Technomate receiver :)

Ooops........just how stupid do I feel right now?

Can I delete that post please? :-rofl2

Oh well I'l have another go next weekend.

Cheers guys.

LOL, don't worry, I probably didn't make it as clear as I could have.:)

No Rolfw I just didnt think. Anyway Ive been thinking. What satelliteman said in post 2 is not the same as I said in post 3. Im 0.8 deg out of alignment and probably a bit out on my elevation as a result. Or at least I think thats right . Either way Im getting quite good at finding 1W so it wont take long to to adjust. So this will be next weekends project.

Whereabouts are you by the way (roughly)?

There's a mention of 0.8w in post#1:confused: unless it's been mis-read :-rofl2

bearing in mind that Im at 0.8deg W do I set 1W as 0 deg?

Hey dont mock the afflicted!;)

LOL Im a good example of how a little knowledge is very dangerous. Ive been playing with the other motor (the replacement is on the dish) and looking at how the motor moves to different positions based on your location. I think Im starting to understand how it works. In anycase I can see that for my location, setting the motor to zero and moving the motor to 1W is the same thing. I think what confused me was that the cogs shift but the motor doesnt move..........Well thats my excuse anyway:)

Satelliteman. I never meant that you misunderstood what I was saying I just wanted to show that I had missed the point.

Rolfw Im in the Bordon Hampshire area.

Correct, the perfect situation and the easiest :)

With the dish mounted on the motor, set the motor to ZERO, loosen the motor bracket,, manualy swing the dish until u get a perfect signal from THOR,,, then tighten the bracket,,, then ur set up for scanning other sats,,,, u might have to fine tune them!!!!!! but that is described in the instruction book for the reciever,,,,
GOOD LUCK

Great, well thank goodness we got that cleared up. Still not sure what to do about 16E though. but at least I have set the dish up correctly (in theory anyway).

Hopefully the snow will have cleared by the weekend and I'll be able to have another fiddle With a bit of skomedal's luck (or rather a lot) I might just sort it.
