Hi wonder if any one can help me, I have a prime focus dish 90cms mounted on the patio been using it for years without any problem other than her in doors has never liked it being on the patio, used various rx’s recently a dreambox 7000 and presently a Vu+ duo location is Sheffield .The back of the house where dish is located faces south so 0.8 w thor is straight down the garden, no problem rx’s 30 e – 30 w. ,I want to replace the dish set up with a new one ,I’m going to mount the dish on the back wall making her in doors happy using t and k brackets and steel pole drive dish with a diseqc motor this is not the problem .My suppler sells 2 setups both using Orbital off set dishes What I want to know is will a 80 cm dish which measures 740 cm * 840 with a 0.2 lmb be good enough to pick up Thor 0.8w which is the weakest sat I look at or do I need the 1mtr which measures 950cm * 1100 one would presume the later should be good enough as its larger that my present one .I know big is beautiful but as equipment is better and the sats are more powerful that when I first started with my present dish I’m thinking the smaller one will be good enough with out having the larger one on the wall which will not make her in doors very happy and makes me wonder with regards to wind load etc.Any recommendations will be welcome on dish size etc
Sorry for being long winded thanks in advance.
Regards Malcolm

Welcome to the forum.
Have a look through the members pictures section, it might give you a few ideas:
Picture of Members' Setups and general satellite installations
Also consider the fracarro penta 85cm, there are a few threads in the pictures section:
http://www.satellites.co.uk/forums/...s/161953-fracarro-penta-85-first-install.html
Of course a 1M dish would give you better reception, on the more difficult satellites, like 16E, but it depends on what you like, personally if I had an open, south facing, garden I'd be tempted for a bigger dish on a ground mount, but I could imagine that causing a few arguments:)

I'm just and little further North than you and get reasonable results from 0.8W using an 80cm Dish.

The problem is that there are a number of "beams", some of which are stronger than others, so my "spare" dish (which is 1.1m) inevitably gets more and better results.

So if would help if you could be more specific about your particular "must haves" on 0.8W .............

PS: My 80cm Dish is actually an Orbital and it is excellent - light in weight and fitted with a decent elevation bracket.

keep the 90cm dish and use it with a vbox with your receiver as your dish will be much better quality than what is available now, a lot of cheap pressed steel dishes about. the dish is not made by precision is it as i would keep hold of that.

i get very good signal on 1west near leeds but using 1.2m channel master.

1metre gibertini on diseqc motor with inverto black ultra lnb would be a good choice.

Hi all thanks for info so far ,
looked at the fracarro penta 85 been having a read around on here and else where looks like no one has tested it back to back so not sure if it has any gains over a 1mtr dish but it is worth considering if they are that good.

Looking at rcs package on 1west for experimental purposes you understand eurosport etc

Ok on keeping the ground mounted dish was trying to make keep my wife happy but then its been there for around 10 or more years you would think she had got use to it by now and I thought the new equipment would be better, the lmb’s claim to have lower noise figures.
Once again thanks in advance
Regards Malcolm

what lnb do you have on the dish is it a c120 lnb which bolts to a feedhorn or a 40mm type lnbf ?

on my dish i use a inverto black ultra which is very good.

keep an eye on ebay for a channel master dish and polar mount as they come up quite regulary.

surprised you wife is not happy with dish in garden as its better than it being on front of the house.

this is a bargain if your quite close by to collect it http://www.satellites.co.uk/forums/...ish-polar-mount-3-groundstand.html#post925728 for 50 notes, scunthorpe.

Hi lmb is a c120 I would leave the dish as is and not bother with any thing new but I know she doesn't like my present setup never has done and as I said i thought the new stuff would be better don't want to go to large if I'm putting the dish on the wall.

well then i would suggest trying an inverto or invacom c120 lnb on the dish as that should improve reception if your current lnb is many years old.

try to keep it in the garden as tell her having it on the house will make it stand out more and ruin the look of the house ? buy her some new shoes or something to get around it maybe.

A Fracarro Penta 85cm coupled with an inverto black ultra LNb would certainly perform if you were considering a new dish.

Hi,
a couple of votes for the Fracarro are we talking aluminuim or steel does it make any difference other than weight.
Once again thanks in advance.

Gibertini aluminum 1m with inverto black ultra LNB. If you get anything else you will keep thinking about upgrading.

An aluminum Fracarro Penta 85cm and inverto black ultra LNB is the other choice, but you will never regret getting the 1m. O-Ha

Both perform extremely well. The aluminium is a lighter dish and won't rust over time and of course the cost difference.

Gibertini 104cm is another as mentioned.

Very pleased with the performance of my Gibertini 1m and Inverto Black Ultra. Don't think you could do better for a 1 metre dish set up.

Hi all,
thanks for all your info looks like we will give the orbital dish a missand go for one of these two below, still a bit worried about putting a 1mtr dish on the side of the house with regards to wind damage etc but I know big is beautiful.
But if the penta is that good do I need a 1 mtre dish any more.
Looks like the boss is not too bothered as long as I remove what I have off the patio now.
Your input and advice is more than welcome.

Have a look here .

If you can't decide, flip a coin.

Or, the thumbnails below of my Gibertini. As Hexah says, a coin toss is probably the easiest way to decide!!

Installed plenty of both dish types and have two here, one of which is posted in the classified section as relocating. Either will give you good results.

The Gibertini 104cm will perform very well and installed on the correct masting/bracketry will stand up to strong winds. They do a polar mount for this dish so if in an exposed location consider this with a linear actuator. If your not exposed then a DiSEqC motor will do well.

Hi thanks for info shown the boss a couple of pictures and she likes the look of the penta so penta it is.
TO SATELLITEMAN or any one else for that matter whats the best setup had a look at your thread http://www.satellites.co.uk/forums/...130365-triax-td88-vs-fracarro-penta-85-a.html and see you have only about 7 or 8 bricks between T & K's presume thats ok.I'm going to use an ally scaffording pipe thick wall used it for radio antenna's before, had it mounted on T& K's at top of house but moving it down to inbetween upstairs and down stairs windows on back of house no problem with line of sight and should be protected from most of the wind was thinking to mount penta towards bottom of pole and a small sky dish above penta to use on vU dual tuner so thinking maybe pole 1mtr long .I was wondering what to use to fastern T& K's as I used raw bolts before and one of them split the brick been told that the large plugs and bolts are good for up to 1.2 mtr dishes.I've had a look around and don't seem to be able to find what other people have used to fix brackets.
Once again thanks for all the info any pointers and links would be welcome.
Regards Malcolm
