Divx update sneaks in Norton security scan

I've used Norton in the past, but all it did was slow down my PC and I certainly wouldn't use it again, so was surprised to see it on one of my PCs this morning when I booted up, particularly as I'd not to my knowledge installed it.

Turns out that Divx update installs it by default, it does have an option to untick, which I didn't spot, in fact wasn't expecting it so didn't see any mention of Norton at all.

So if you use Divx and don't want Norton on your PC, make sure that you untick the box when you update, just checked and it isn't on the first window of options, it cleverly pops up afterwards, so many like me, assume it's part of the installation process and click it without really looking.:)

Yes I fortunately spotted it and I have come across a number of updaters using this kind of deceptive technique
 
The popular one at the minute is the Ask toolbar. Even if you say yes then go back and untick it then it still installs!
 
I really hate it when they do that, they're no better than those popups that appear offering you a free scan only to dump a virus or trojan on your computer, cos both leave your computer slow and unstable.... :-Nooo
 
I have CCleaner installed on my laptop, which has a removal screen that works somewhat better than the Control panel / remove programe in the o/s.

Once done then the main programme can be used to completely delete all the additional rubbish that comes with the unwanted payload.

Yes I have been using it and recommending piriform CCleaner for quite a while, it certainly does what it says on the tin and for nothing
