A brand new press-release, from Dream Multimedia!

Dream revolutionises HDTV
First HDTV receiver with hard drive and burner.

Lünen, 29. May 2006. Dream, the leading producer of Linux-based set-top
boxes, has once again demonstrated its innovative ability. The Dream DM
8000 is the first Linux-based set-top box for high definition television,
equipped with four Plug&Play tuners to ensure it is ready for any future
challenges.

The DM 8000 provides pure state of the art technology: two CI slots, two
DVB-S2 tuners (MPEG-4) plus two additional slots for twin tuners, which are
freely selectable via plug & play depending on the reception path preferred
(satellite, cable, terrestrial). In addition, the box provides a reader for CF and SD cards.

The rear panel of the Linux box provides two Scart sockets, an S-Video output as well as an HDMI and a YUV connection (up to 1080i), complemented by two USB interfaces. An additional USB connection is provided on the front panel. Of course, the box also comes equipped with a 100 Mbit full duplex network connection.

Recording and archiving of HD material is no problem at all with the Dream
DM 8000. It can be optionally retrofitted with a hard drive (SATA support) as well as with a DVD burner. A Mini PCI slot as well as the large OLED display round off the full range of features.

Dream spokesperson Tim Ziemann: „The DM 8000 forcefully underlines
Dream’s role as a pioneer in the technology of digital television. Now, HDTV is even better than before. With the DM 8000, recording and burning on DVD’s is no longer a problem. It makes no difference, whether you wish to receive HDTV via satellite, cable or via the terrestrial route. The DM 8000 is ready for the future of HDTV on all distribution paths – right now.“

The Linux HDTV box will be presented fort he first time at the ANGA Cable
show. The Dream DM 8000 is available in black or silver. The RRP in Germany
is 799 €. The dimensions: 430 x 80 x 270 millimeters (WxHxD). Dream is
pleased to invite all those who are interested to see the future of television
today to visit the Dream stand (J16).

799 €=£550? assuming you can get it for £499 it is still poor value. You can build an HTPC which will eat the DB alive for that sort of loot.

500S is a wise choice for the time being until prices settle down :D

The press release is not yet on Dream's website (as at time of my posting).

I'll buy a DM-8000 without even thinking twice, just as soon as it's undergone a couple of months of successful 'field trials' to idenify any bugs. An HTPC cannot compete on any level, software or hardware IMO.

Have invested in a HTPC and now getting rid of all the cards - Using it to play games only and downloading movies from newsgroups ;)

As Stick is saying, and in my personal opinion, a HTPC cannot replace a satellite box :) more so, a dreambox.

Great :D

I'll take 5 of yours with 12 months waranty for less than £499 then.

And I'll expect the normal level of support during that time too.

Deal ???

two DVB-S2 tuners (MPEG-4) plus two additional slots for twin tuners

so thats 6 tuners, sound ace as imagine recording 6 channels at once

it says they can be satelllite , cable or terrestrial. so that means you could have 4 tuners for sat, 2 for dtt etc and have it as a multi reciever and record dtt and sat. it sounds worth the price

I'm reading that as four tuners total, two supplied plus two slots for two singles (or two supplied and spare capacity for 'twin' tuners) but I might be wrong :confused

I see one slot per tuner but even better if you're right :D

Four's enough for me :p

whats more interesting is that you can have different tuners in it so you could have freeview and satellite without needing two separate boxes

You can already do that on the 7025, so not really new.

"Twin-Tuner DVB-S, DVB-C or DVB-T, plug & play, mixable"

Try getting a non-sat p&p tuner though...
