All,

I'm getting rid of my Dbox2 (V.Media/cable), replacing it with DM800 HD (ordered).

I have done some reading but cannot gather requirements on receiving HD channels esp. Sky. The house has a dormant dish with coax coming in and an old Sky receiver (White with blue - similar to Sky+HD) from previous subscription. The Sky box has old viewing card (probably expired) by NDS (blue).

- Do I need a satellite subscription?
- Will I need a card reader with DM800 HD?
- Is there a list of channels available on DM800 via Satellite?

I'm comfortable with flashing (as described in sticky posts) with Nabilo/Gemini available from Luxsat.

Any help or pointers to previous related discussions very much appreciated!

Yes you will need a subscription. If you want the full HD experience (movies sport & entertainment) you will be paying the nice people at Sky about fifty quid a month.

Thanks Analoguesat. Any help with the other questions...

- Will I need a Smargo card reader with DM800 HD?
- Is there a list of channels available on DM800 via Satellite?

This will help me weigh benefits of Dbox2 (that enables movies, sport + ent) to DM800 apart from the obvious HD advantage. Maybe I should just stick to Dbox2 and return DM800???

1) Havent got the faintest idea :D

2) Flysat, Lyngsat, KingofSat. Take your pick.

To phrase my question differently, if I were to connect DM800 to a sat dish with no cards, will it pick up any channels? If so, is there a list?

I noticed a few digital + clear channels on lyngsat; I suppose they could be picked by the box.

Any help much appreciated.

You will get all the free to air channels. If your dish was pointing at 13E you would get loads of weird and wonderful channels from all around Europe and Asia:

Ignore anything in green or dark blue.

Great thanks mate, is this using any image i.e. Nabilo/Gemini or others? I intend to post updates here as I work my way around DM800 for Sat.

How would I get HD channels i.e. beebs, ITV and others, if I wanted to? If there is a link to a Wiki setup somewhere for UK Sat on DM800, will be really useful if you could share, this would stop me pestering! ;) I know the response 'Look around', n that's what I will do ;) afaik, there wasn't a wiki for dbox but i figured

No wikis or anything like that :D Best you will get is help on this forum - and the idiots guide. which has a lot of tips for specific situations.

You will get the basic channels on any image so dont worry too much about that. Stick with the free channels for a few months - get to know how to drive the box properly before trying to do anything fancy with it.

Hi DM 800 once you have made a few more post you can start to send PMs

Pm me as i have just got a 800. i will be able to answer many of your questions but not all!

as for smargo and stuff - a sky card will work in a dmm 800 with softcams, i assume this is all new to you though as it was to us all. pm me i will give you my msn and then you can get some real time help.

He wont be able to use pm's for a month after joining- so end of August. The restriction was added after a spate of folk joined up to spam existing members a while back.

Anyway, forums dont work like that - any question or none personal information should be asked and answered on the forum so everone gets the benefit of the answer. Anyone trying to shortcircuit that is abusing the forum.

Sorry, i know setting up a box can take a long time and it is sometimes easier to have someone on the other end of an instant chat! i know when i started i had help from a coupl of guys who talked me through the whole process, i got the basics from here but with so many questions it is easier to have a friend!

no problems anyway.

Enjoy your Dmm 800 and dont send it back. it is a great bit of kit!

Thanks for offering your help chavo. Much appreciated. I had almost given up on DM800 after Analoguesat's help thinking if I were only to get 2-3 HD channels with no sat subscription, I'd need a sat subscription (abt 26/mth) to get HD which defeats the point. Freesat would provide a few for less than half the cost and dBox (cable) doesn't need subscription. Hope you get where I'm coming from.

I've a fair idea of softcams (newcs and cccam) but not 100% sure if they work. There were some issues with tuner overheating. Motors and dishes would cost extra if I were to go that route. I'm pretty comfortable with linux as well with ubuntu as my desktop for more than 2 yrs. Some posts deal with two DMs sharing card which confuses me, and then there is some cool work that runs a server on desktop that speaks to DM that confuses me further. I'm sure you've been there before.

Question is what is the return on investment for DM800 compared to a Dbox + Freesat setup I'm currently leaning towards.

Regards,
DM800HD
