Do Smartcards Work In Any Receiver?

My Satellite Setup
VU + DUO with 500gb PVR
My Location
SW France
I currently have a Smartcard in my Strong 8000 receiver. I want to change to perhaps a Pace or Technomate. The card is official issue (I lived in Holland for a while) The Strong was purchased in Holland. I now live in France.
I have been told that if I replace the receiver, the card will not work. Can anyone confirm this is so?
 
yes it is possible that it wont work with other receivers, like the smart card for orbit satellite, it wont work in other receivers. but as far as i know the card for filipino channels 5degrees, work with the eurostar receiver.
