Douglas Rain, who provided the pitch perfect voice for HAL in the film 2001: A Space Odyssey has died of natural causes aged 90. Primarily a stage actor Rain replaced American actor Martin Balsam in the film whose voice was deemed to be too human.

He died at the St. Mary's Memorial Hospital near Stratford, Ontario yesterday of natural causes.
