Wud just like to express some of the sentiments expressed in this post. as someone who did not understand what the difference between a clone and the real thing, i jumped for a clone dm800 at a good price. now i live with the consequences of my decision. its a pain but i live and learn. many out here in internetland make mistakes, do not research enough, but we learn at our cost. the clone is fine but the real thing is better. and yet i have an issue. take the 7025 plus box with dual tuner compared to dm800. and the look at the new dm500hd box. now as a normal user i love the idea of being able to watch and record. and yet dreambox insist on putting out single tuner boxes (other than dm8000) at massive prices. but really strange is that they got it right with the 7025 plus and then they took a backward step with the dm800 sn the new dm500hd. what are they doing.:confused

The DM500HD looks to me like a long term replacement for the DM800. It lacks only USB and an OLED display compared to 800, but the processor is quicker and it does not suffer from overheating problems as it has an internal fan.
I don't mind the single tuner boxes - I just put 2 instead of one in any location and it gives me the same facilities. Combine this with a Harmony Remote control for convenience. It also means I can play with the one box while the familty can watch TV on the other box - reduces conflict. And on top of it all the new single tuner boxes are tiny and a great space saver.

Thanks for that shumifan50, that means I can run it along side my 800 with no problems.

Somewhere else on this forum is a thread on how to set up multiple dreamboxes in the same location. There is a plugin in OpenPli (might be in other images as well) called multi-remote, amongst other names, that allows you to select one of four possible remote control 'channels'. That fixes the dreambox. Then you have to set the remote to the selected channel. it is all described on the thread (I can't remember exactly where it is). It is important to note that the standard remote setup in all images will respond to a remote set up for any of the four channels, so you have to set up each dreambox in the same location, not just the newly added ones.

Take your point shumifan. However why should it be necessary to use multiple boxes. If you take the dm8000, my take on this is that its geared at the extreme enthuasist. For us who would just like a box that would offer similar to sly+ functionality, the best solution would seem to be the 7025 plus. as you say why did they not put usb on the dm500hd. if the 500hd came out with dual usb, dual tuner would it not be the box that would suit 99% of users. instead its a box with huge potential but has shortcomings

Simple maths: 2 boxes:
2 x 400Mhz processors.
2 x sata buses
I fiddle 1 box, family watch other box

1 box:
1 x 400Mhz processor.
1 x sata bus
Family kills me because i am fiddling with the box:eek:

I like to live LOL:)

With encryption changes becoming more frequent across europe in recent times Id' say a USB socket is essential as you never know what you might need to read a card !. Shame they left it out I guess.

B16MCC: I agree it is a shame, but they had to make it inferior to the DM800 in some way, toherwise they would be stuck with the DM800 stock. It is actually not the end of the world though, as cards can be handled on a Linux PC based card server, which I find better as I don't disturb my shares while I fiddle with the dreamboxes. If they make the whole business of reading the card very time critical, they would still have to leave enough margin for differences in their boxes, so that local LANs will work, and that would not be the worst thing.

Shumifan, good answer. i enjoyed that. but as b16mcc says its a bit daft that dream removed the usb, and as a question what did they add to this box. i love the 800 but will be constantly critical on not being able to connect all the i/o ports as it was never designed for all ports to be used simultaneously. but hey if you manage to hold the family unit together by buying an extra box, then this is good

I agree totally with the method of hosting the card mate, I run ubuntu. Most users don't though.
Also it is nice having the 800 to dev with and the 8000 gets left alone in the lounge.

Also, if Dream finally got a HDCP license which allowed them to fit HDMI to the new 500HD , how did they achieve this for the 500HD when they failed with the 800/8000. It makes me wonder if the 800/8000 may be revised some day and replace the DVI with HDMI.
