hi not sure if im in right place i wanna get a motorised satellite system and ive heard about dreambox also i want to do cardsharing aswell and was just wondering if the dreamboxes are the best for it or can u use any other linux boxes for it and what is the best setup ?

500's are hit and miss with motorised systems. All new ones are clones because DM stopped making them 2-3 years ago. Some clones have poor power supplies in them and wont drive a motor properly.

Be warned the advanced features of any linux box are not the easiest things in the world to get to grips with. - it can take months of tinkering, frustration, and general annoyance before you get the hang of them. If you expect to take one out of the box and get c/s working the first night think again if you havent used a linux box before.

If you are thinking of c/s Sky UK dont waste your money - Sky will be implementing new anti c/s measures in the near future and will probably kill off most c/s'ing.

hi so what box would i be better off getting as i can get someone who already has his box up and running with carsharing he has dm800 hd but i dont wanna pay too much

Theres no such thing as a "best box" for everyone. The biggest question you have to decide on is " how much do I want to spend?"

If you want a top of the range DM 8000HD receiver its a thousand quid near enough.

£300 to 400 will get you a mid range Dreambox or one of the new Vu Duo's which seem to be well regarded so far.

Under £100 will get you not much more than a scabby 500 clone which can be ok or can be dreadful.

Your choice really. Do some reading around the linux section of the site and see if any of the receivers catch your eye.

And just as importantly are you willing to put the work in learning how they work under the bonnet? Theres no shortcuts here if you want to get the best out of a linux box. If you want to take it out of the box and watch pay tv then buy summat else and get a subscription card with it.
