USB to serial connectors are notoriously flaky ands can be a royal pain to get going.

I'll wait for the new cable see what happens as I didn't have a female to female 9 pin lead just male to female

You need a null modem cable. The connections are different on a normal rs232 lead.

A null modem cable is a RS-232 serial cable where the transmit & receive lines and also the handshake lines are cross linked.
