Hello,

I am a total noob, I have read the Idiot's guide, but it doesn't answer my questions regarding a 500S and a legit Sky Card:

1. I got the legit card from Insat International and they need a Sky Digibox serial number to activate it. Since I have a Dreambox, how do I proceed? Get a genuine Sky Digibox and put it's serial number in the Dreambox?
2. Insat guys tell me something about ECMs (electronic counter measures) - that it will permanently damage my card if used with Dreambox. How do I avoid that?
3. Insat guys also told me that the card updates once a month and in Dreambox that won't happen. How do I avoid that?
I am interested in getting an uninterrupted picture, without the need of updating anything once in a while.
Thank you for your time!

Has the card been activated? If it has you can put it in your Dreambox, with CCcam running, and it'll update over air.

If it hasn't been activated you'll probably need to do that in a sky box.

Thanks a lot for your reply. After I do that, is the Dreambox exposed to ECMs? Will I have an uninterrupted video signal 24/7/365 without any manual interference?
Thank you!

If it is a valid card why would you be concerned about Electronic Counter Measures???

If it is a valid subscription it is valid end of story, but it will only open the channels you have subscribed to nothing more............

Thank you for your reassuring me.

This is what Insat guys have told me:

I suggest you look at web sites that specialise on Dreambox use with a Sky card. What I know from past experience is that on a regular basis, cards that are used in a Dreambox have to be inserted in a Sky digibox to update the card as the card will not update in a Dreambox. At least that is my understanding of the matter.

The other thing you have to remember is that Sky has a department that regularly send ECMs (electronic counter measures) to stop the use of Sky cards in unauthorised receivers like Dreambox. As I said before, if you insist on using the Sky card with a Dreambox and experience card corruption (your card can become totally useless through ECMs), we will not be able to help you at all. When Sky send ECMs cards can be damaged, which at the same time will result with a lot of cards being requested from Sky as replacement for the faulty cards. Sky will not send out a card unless the faulty one is returned.
Once they have your faulty card in hand, they will know immediately that the card was being used in a non Sky receiver and immediately cancel the subscription.

I hope you forget about using a Dreambox with a Sky card. It is asking for trouble.

Is that real? Should I worry about that?

Some of what was said here was true a while back (The first paragraph), but CCcam can now update your card and there is no pairing required on the dreambox.

I wouldn't worry about putting your genuine sky card in a Dreambox running CCcam.

How about the ECMs? Did any of you guys heard of anything like that?

What you need to worry about more is that Sky will be doing a card swap in a few weeks time and its not yet known if they will work in anything apart from an official Sky receiver.

You dont need to worry about Entitlement Control Messages if you have a genuine card.

As Analoguesat says, things might change with the upcoming card swap.

current cards work fine in a dreambox - no problem whatsoever.
about the card swap : the new NDS3 Sky italia cards seem to work fine when using the CCcam/NewRC combination. Not sure if the same will go with the new Sky UK cards, but then again, it won't be long before semeone "finds" a solution for this problem.
There are just too many dreamboxes around :-)

Surely if your paying a subscription every month, and they zap your card for not being in a skybox then they will have to send you a new card?

Trust me i am well into double figures with legit sky boxes that amazingly break just after the 12 month warrenty runs out.... ummmm. if they ever said to me you should have your skycard in a sky box, my answer would be
"well it would be if your boxes wasnt CRAP!!"

My dreambox on the same shelf... under same TV, has outlasted many sky boxes over the past few years.

however :D

if your signal is lost cos of the ECM etc.
just tell sky the Skybox you bought second hand broke, so you put the card in your dreambox to save money on buying another skybox.
