Hi everyone, I have had an enquiry from a potential customer about installing a Dreambox system. His requirements are to install "several" boxes, network them together and to install and activate card sharing software.

Now if I understand correctly we cannot discuss card sharing here, but having never installed a Dreambox system before, would it be something I could pick up? I also do networking etc so I am ok with that side of things.

Can anyone tell me what is involved installing a system like this?

Hours and hours of reading!

Setting up a card share is relatively simple once you have got your head around whats involved, but its not something you are going to get working in a weekend if you have never used a DB before.

BTW if its c/s Sky UK dont bother - new anti c/s measures will almost certainly knock out c/s in the not too distant future..

I've merged the two threads, please don't start duplicate threads. It makes the forum untidy.

You've already been given your answer. All the info you need is on the forum. However setting up c/s networks is not something that I would involve myself in on a proffesional level. There are people serving at her majestys pleasure for undertaking similar projects. Not to mention the civil claims that the providers involved could levy. If your going to do it I hope it is VERY well paid.
 
Thanks for the info and sorry for the duplicate thread. I think i`ll give the c/s a miss and just offer to install the box. I shall commence reading up on Dreambox!
 
Taking them out of the box and setting them up as a basic receiver is relatively easy - they arent much different from other boxes. Its the advanced functions that take time to get your head around.

(Networking / flashing images / loading add ons etc)

Lol - you've been saying and repeating that for months, if not years!! It must be the most used phrase on the forum :)

Anyway, to answer the question further and properly, yes a fair bit of reading is involved, but internal card sharing will continue to work without issues.

All that sky can really do is adjust the timeout request limits for viewing cards within the NDS system, and although this *may* affect some of the commercial cs servers out there (avoid them anyway lol) or possibly remote cs with mates etc (mainly due to Internet lag) 'in house' systems should be fine, even if the changes are made.

TBH if they could do anything, it would have been done years ago, and certainly when the new cards were issued. Instead they are concentrating their activities in shutting down the commercial ventures, so my guess is that there is nothing further that they can do without jeopardising the stability of the service for genuine customers.

Doesn't make it less true though. The point is that until they DO make the changes that are threatened it's an expensive gamble to buy into the DB and CS arena when it may end soon.

Hmm, a very bold statement. Would you be prepared to reimburse the OP if his new system (several of them) went down the pan in a few month's time?

It's all speculation anyway but, yes, altering the timing of the data decryption requests seems to be the best bet. This would knock out the commercial CS because of the latency in the Internaet and MAY still allow home CS if the latency is low.

You're absolutely correct in your final statement about not jeopardising genuine customers but this doesn't mean they could have done it years ago. We just don't know what technology is inside the new white card. They also had to download new firmware to the STBs and make sure that the slowest of these could still run. All this takes time to make sure that it creates the least impact on genuine viewing.

And if i were you i would stay clear of installing multiple linux boxes, Not that it cant be done, it can, and relitavley simple enough, The problem will come later when as ive experienced on a regular basis, Is that the customer or yourself will NOT have much experience when things go wrong, Therefor you will end up HERE asking HOW !!

Believe me you wont get any peace !! Only today ive been to 3 customers who bought their own Linux boxes, I fitted motorised dish to these boxes and programed sats and channels all working when i left !! Only to get calls saying the dish has lost the sats and channels and CCcam !! and blaming the dish setup lol !! And guess what, All of them poked about downloading things they knew nothing about I.E new images etc, totally wiping all my settings out.

So now you understand why ADMIN will always tell you to read up and aquire the knowledge before attempting to install these boxes especially when its your living.

Lazy people who cant be bothered or too thick to try themselves instead of sticking it on your toes should stick to SKY boxes.

PS. Them 3 customers have now learned the hard way. :mad:

Tivu, I wouldnt mind i have a backup image for most boxes all ready to go that i load for them , And still they manage to mess it up through lack of knowledge. No lesson to me: lesson to customer when he have to pay again: :)
 
Well it's all good for the business, I suppose ............... but must be pretty irritating. I bet some punters still try to blame you even when you've shown them the error of their ways.
