dreamup won't communicate with my dreambox 500s

Hi to all, i am a newbe here and also dreambox and would appreciate any help
I have windows xp on my computer i have downloaded dreamup
and started it. when i press connect it says switch on your dreambox
i have a null modem cable connected via a usb to serial adapter which is installed
i have tried both types of null modem config ie no handshaking and also full handshaking
when i turn on the dreambox it comes up in the log box and says the date and also dm500
so it recognises the box but nothing else happens please help

Thats when you hit the flash button !! read up mate and you will learn

i have been reading for the last few days the flash button stays greyed out
and the green bar does not go across. Through reading i have got this far but it's doing my head in
