Has anyone experienced what I'm going through right now - two months ago the hearing in my one good ear disappeared overnight, returning a month later for a few days before disappearing again and taking my already damaged (Tinnitus and high frequency total loss) with it.

I'm currently profoundly deaf with no prognosis.

Tried everything my GP and Dr.Google suggest, but no joy.

Would a course of leeches do the trick? :(

I have an ear infection during winter months. I put Tiger Balm on my ear and the germs flee.

I used to get terrible itching in my ears, doctor told me to use warm salt water a couple of times a day to bathe them. Not easy trying to pour salt water into my ears so the local chemist suggested Sterimar Isotonic Nasal Hygiene Nasal Spray. Worked a treat and i have only had to use one tin in 15 months.

The only time Ive ever had something like what you are having I had to have my ears syringed for excessive wax build up. Very unpleasant and I was exceedingly grateful when the nurse restored my hearing.

Sounds like the Dr or nurse needs to have a look and see if you need your ears syringed.

I hated the experience.

You could also try some stuff for swimmers ear.

Hopefully you get it sorted soon :Y

The reason for asking is down to the size of the ear canals. People with perfect pitch, or with a talent for picking up an instument and learning intuitively (as opposed to continuous tutoring) often have slightly smaller ear canals, sometjmes with additional bends in them, which can become infected, blocked or close up as they age.

GP won't sanction syringing until the persistent infections have gone, to minimise the risk of further damage.

It's possible, but not proven, (Too much effusion for the torch to see through) that the second ear to succumb has a perforation, which also means exercising caution before syringing.

Very isolating, being unable to hear clearly. And SWMBO tuts when I turn the Telly Audio way up beyond 11

Ah, your first post didnt mention infection (though the thread title does).

Anyone else in the household with something similar ?

No. Quack insists that such things are (almost) invariably not infectious or contagious and the mystery of contracting them is purely individual.

Time to give the Cat Poo a whirl :-wow

I had intermittent hearing problems when I was a child. When it became problematic, I was referred to an Ear, Nose and Throat specialist, who had a good visual probe inside my ears, but didn't find anything untoward.

He then used an audio oscillator to send various tones at increasing strengths to a massive, heavy pair of headphones clamped to my ears (no noise-cancelling devices then, this was in the 40's) , to ascertain at what level I was able to hear the tones.

I can't remember the outcome of this examination, but It was significant enough for me to remember it clearly now. I did have an operation at about that time for adenoid removal, so perhaps they were affecting my hearing.

Since then, the usual problem of blocked ears, for which I had my GP's nurse syringe them out a couple of times, which incidentally I didn't find at all unpleasant.

Right now I'd happily take an ear infection over the pain of lower-back slipped disc, at least then I'd be able to walk... :(

I well remember that Liew I spent a lot of my first year in hospital.I had a mastoid operation Thus I have been almost deaf in my left ear ever since.I well remember going to the clinic for the tests the technician. Don't know what they called them then.Turned the knob until I could hear the tone.

Tone (pure), and speech audiometry.

Audiology calibration, I used to set up the equipment, but it was over 30 years ago.
