There are a few very old lava flows down in that part, the closest one is Coso Volcanic Field, but thats a bit outside of the quake zone.

For them it's probably the equivalent of the town drunk farting, a nuisance, but nothing of consequence and just don't stand downwind of him...

Of course, it's a boy cries wolf scenario, they're used to it, so they're probably too complacent about it and it could lead to many deaths if they don't GTFO of there...
