Last week,I lost most of the program files and applications from my PC (WinXP). No matter, I thought, I can easily replace them from the WinXP backup hard disk I luckily kept up-to-date.
Athough this meant some applications wouldn't run until I had re-registered them, that wasn't too much trouble. What I didn't realise was that IE8 had to be re-installed, and this removed my Outlook Express 6, which I assume isn't part of IE8 now. So now I have to use Windows Live Mail (which I don't care much for, preferring the look of OE6.)
The problem was that none of my email folders (Inbox, Outbox, Sent Items) in OE6 that were stored in my backup disk were recognised in WLM, so I only had the last few days' emails that my email server held. Of course, this was because the OE6 .dbx file association can't be read by WLM, which are .eml files.
This meant I needed to convert the files to .eml so WLM can find them in FILE - IMPORT - MESSAGES. There are several conversion programs available - at a price. Luckily after much searching I came across a German website (_ukrebs-software.de) which has a little free executable called 'dbxconv' at the bottom of the web page. It's a DOS program and needs to be run in the directory containing the .dbx files. I used Microsoft CMDHerePowertoy for this.
With the conversion of the .dbx files to .eml, I could now add the .eml files to the Windows Live Mail Storage Folder, and hey presto! all my old emails were now accessible.
A long-winded way of doing it, and there's probably an easier method, but it anyway, did the job.
