Hi, I recently bought the cheapest satellite receiver from Maplin to replace my in-laws' 5 year old receiver which had broken down. The Maplin receiver works fine, but there are certain channels they can no longer see because they appear "scrambled". For example RAI 4. The previous receiver had no special subscription cards or decoder cards anything else but somehow managed to show those channels. Can someone please let me know how this is supposed to work? Do we need to buy a different receiver and which one? Thanks

What make/model was your old receiver?
Rai Uno, Due and Tre plus a few other related ones are generally FTA, but do sometimes encrypt for premium content eg F1.
Rai 4 has never been FTA - Did you mean Rete Quattro ??

I am going by what my in-laws tell me, they say it was RAI-4. As well as a few other channels from Greece.
The old receiver was 5-6 years old and had no slots, or decoder cards yet it managed to display RAI-4. I will check on "Rete Quattro".

Well Rai 4 has never been FTA, so if the old Receiver got it ok, then there is some vital info missing here!
It is part of the Tivùsat Platform, but is nevertheless Encrypted . This is a fairly new Platform, however.
If you look at the _http://www.flysat.com/hotbird.php you'll find a bunch of the Rai Channels on Transponder #124 (10992 V) and this confirms that Rai 1,2,3 are FTA (generally) but Rai Movies and Rai 4 are scrambled.
Believe me, we are a part-Italian household and watch Italian TV a lot. So I should be most interested as to the means by which you got Rai 4 !

Similarly, the only FTA Greek Channels on Hotbird are ERT World, Kanali Voulis and Betorium TV.
Anyway, if you navigate around the site I linked to before (Flysat) or have a look at Lyngsat or KingofSat, you'll find all the info about what is where, in which language, what packages include what and all sorts of other stuff. They are generally bang up to date (Unlike most Receivers!!)

Rai 4 as well as the blanked out stuff on Rai 1, Rai 2, and Rai 3 is available with any receiver that accepts k€ys (or is patched as you say.)
From what I've heard, it's been continuously wide open for at least 5 years.
However that still doesn't match what akis is saying really as the k€ys change monthly so without any maintenance the Rai channels wouldn't have remained viewable for a long time.
