Hi everyone, I'm looking at getting myself an Enigma2 receiver for the sole purpose of having the ability to stream live channels from the box to VLC media player on my PC.

I'm hoping that I will be able to do this with 4:2:2 feeds - unwatchable via the receiver but viewable once streamed over my network.

I have a few questions before before hand though:

1) will the enigma2 software allow me to record a channel/stream to a USB hard drive as well as streaming it over the network, at the same time?

2) Will it allow me to stream a channel/feed that is BISS encrypted providing I have the key?

3) will it allow multiple people/PCs over the network to watch the stream at the same time?

Many Thanks

Many thanks for the prompt response. Currently have an Openbox V8S which has no streaming functionality so I've been eyeing up the Zgemma Star 2S as an upgrade.

Streaming on the network cetainly works fine here, solo2, can stream channels on many different pc's simultanously. Network coping without problems, what may be watchable only limited by number of sat tuners \ outputs from lnb's. And recordings are streaming fine as well.

1) A stream is like a recording, one tuner will allow the same channel being recorded and streamed at the same time! In addition you can do multiple streaming on different channels of the same transponder as well. Multi tuner receivers will allow multi streaming and recording of different transponders, provided these tuners are properly configured! So it's not an Enigma2 limitation as much as it's a hardware limitation!

2) Yes, once the decoding is done internally in the receiver you will have no problem at all. In theory this works seemlessly with emulation, however there might be limitations with channels decoded by subscription smartcards.

3) Yes, it's the same thing as in question 1. Note though, that any home network LAN itself is not boundless. Unless you use some kind of transcoding (some receivers have this capability), direct TS streaming transfers the whole data stream of the channel which is quite a few MB/sec, especially on HD channels. I use a Gigabit LAN network but my receivers' ethernet adapters are Megabits, so I'm limited to a maximum of 11Mbps of real time data transfer overall! This is the maximum my receiver will allow to stream. Now imagine what would happen if I have to divide this data to multiple clients. Some new receivers provide Gigabit ethernet though. Again, a hardware limitation, not an Enigma2 one.

In regards to 4:2:2, the TS stream is transfered as is, meaning the video codec decoding (this is different than the crypt decoding) is done on the client's side. PCs use software video decoding, so once your PC is powerful enough to handle real time decoding, there is absolutely no issue there! None of my receivers (so far) for instance can decode 4K, but my PC is more than capable. So I am able to stream 4K seamlessly, and even record 4K channels and watch the recording on my PC as well.
I hope I got you covered!
Cheers!

Thank you so much for the detailed response, I now have a much better understanding and feel a lot more comfortable in taking the plunge and buying an enigma2 receiver. :)
