This one has eluded me for some reason ever since I saw it listed on Arabsat 5C ..
Why I don't know ..as I never had problems with the other transponders..
..but tonight I managed to log it in at over 5db..
I'll put it down to favourable conditions ...or they've upped the power..
Anyway ..'tis another one safely logged away..

Hmm ..a quick query regarding the arabic mux @ 3884R
Could one of you guys check its still there for me ..
No probs with any other channels listed ..
but KOS and Lyngsat report its still there ...but Christina cannot see it ...even at a reduced power level ?

All 9 channels of 3884R , are still there at 9.1 db with my F15 .

I have it back now ..
This ones a mystery ?
I have a mechanical push-button A B switch in the system which allows me to switch the F15 or indeed ..any selected receiver to either the diseqc 1.1 switch ..and the rest of the dishes in the system ..
Or indeed bybass this and connect the Cband lnb only directly to the stb chain..
Switching to position A connects to the uncomitted switch and isolates the cband direct feed(for dxing )
Switching to position B reverses this ..connecting the Cband lnb directly to the receiver chain ..and isolates the uncomitted switch ..
In the A position the B side of the switch should _not_ have any effect ...in theory ..
..but it does ..but only at this specific frequency it seems..
Totally disconnecting the F connector on B whilst leaving the switch in the A position brings back this mux at around 11 db..
So the presence of the switch even though isolated in position B behaves as a notch filter at one specific frequency..
I'll order a replacement I think ...as there looks to be an issue internally ..
Perhaps corrosion creating a resistive path ...ie NOT truely isolated.
Mystery solved ..but nonetheless fascinating.

I do find that odd, VS: The A/B swotch is constructed as a true Cable Isolation device with a positive break action on the Port to be disabled.

But I wonder (not having dismantled one) if it's only a single pole device ie the Screen is connected in common regardless?

When you replace it, are you prepared to dismantle the old one for us, just for interest (I have three and they are all in use!)?
 
certainly if it comes apart easy enough ..I will do just that ..
If only beacuse I'm curious as to why now ..

I should add ..that the suspect AB switch wasn't bought brand new by me ..
It was purchesd with box of sat bits from a radio ham exhibition/market some years ago ...so who knows what its been made to switch in the past ..
Maybe it even had a lightning strike to deal with ??
Anyway ...when the new switch arrives ..I'll dismantle it if possible and take a peek inside..

Ok ..my new AB switch arrived today ...
after fitting the Notch filter effect was considerably less ..though not totally dismissed.

I shall be using both switches to fully isolate the DX ..direct feed ...but first I had to open the original to peek inside ..

What I did find was no corrosion so why in one position was this effect occurring..
The only thing I could find was that one of the contacts was much higher physically than the corresponding contact on the other side ...thus the gap isolating the contacts was smaller...it is logical therefore although only a few pico farads this capacitance would be higher ..
I can only conclude the reduced isolation ..and increased capacitance in a die cast box was producing what is in effect a 'tuned' circuit which was acting as a notch T filter ..and specfic only at this one IF frequency ..
widening this gap has solved the specific frequency problem ..but may well shift it causing dropout at some other frequency ...thus I shall employ another level of isolation in the form of a second switch ...
one on the source ...and one on the destination ..
Told you my switching system is complex ...and a little unorthodox.
Anyway ..
Problem solved.

20E plenty of channels from Iran 3964R 30000. Strong as others from that bird.
