Hi all,

I have just noticed that Eurobird 4A (formerly located at 4.0°E) is on the move... and whatever it's final destination... it's certainly going to get there in record time...

Code:
http://www.n2yo.com/?s=26487

Does anyone know it's destination...?

Best Wishes,
Zorch

It is going westward at 0.5degrees per day. As you say, in a big hurry but to where?

Eutelsat W1/Eurobird 4A currently @ 16,38 west moving west current destination unknown,
Code:
http://www.n2yo.com/?s=26487

Likewise with Astra 1D @ 37.5 west also moving west due for graveyard orbit as it cannot have much fuel left.

Yes, I think it's over with Astra 1D, but its altitude of 35850 km isn't much above the geostationary 35780 km yet.
Probably not enough fuel left to get it above 36000 km.
Eurobird 4A at 36175 km is a quite convincing graveyard altitude.

BTW, in my satellite list I just added the listed operational lifetime (in years).
Often, a satellite will continue a few years after this, in inclined orbit.

Hi hvdh,

Thanks for the reply regarding Eurobird 4A & Astra 1D...

That's a really impressive satellite list of yours mate... and what is really interesting to me... looking at your list... is the expected lifetime of Eutelsat W4 at 36.1°E

36.10 = Eutelsat W4 26369 36.10° Ku 2000-05, 12y / MAR: Eutelsat 36A

If this satellite does eventually disappear from the 36E position (as it will be 12 years old this May)... then it could mean that we will be able to get much better signal reception from the [Sub-Sahara Africa] beam TP's again from W7...

Best Wishes,
Zorch

Do you think the Russian W4 signals are disturbing the Sub-sahara W7 signals even there in the U.K.?
Anyway if W4 goes, I guess the transponders will probably just move to W7 (that already does part of the Russian beam transponders).

Maybe W-4 will last another 14 months as W-7 does not have enough spare transponders to cover the current 23 active on W-4 as 60 transponders already in use from W-7 from my calculations only leaves 10 spare then Express AT2 due for launch Jan 2013 with 16 Ku-band transponders to cover western part of Russia will be able to cover the rest still a bit tight on capacity @ 36 east so maybe another satellite will be leased from somewhere ?

Hi again hvdh,

No perhaps not... it's far more likely to be because the (H/V) DSTV/Multichoice Africa frequencies part share a lot of TP's with (L/R) NTV Plus/Tricolor TV frequencies...

Zorch

Yes I dislike Eutelsat new approach, it's as though they want to "anonymize" the actual satellite used. In time it's going to be a mess, but we'll keep track. ;)

It looks like Eurobird 4A may have been de-orbited as it has vanished from some satellite charts now.

Astra 1D as I mentioned before in this thread, wasn't in a convincing graveyard altitude.
Now the westward movement seems to have stopped, at a position of about 40.4 West. :confused

Ah good old Astra 1D. I still remember getting frequency shifter to be able to view this satellite on my Amstrad 510 back in 1994! And even then I had to get a new LNB as the original 1.0dB 10GHz LO wasn't receiving much of the lower frequencies.
