Powerful new satellite for Middle East & North Africa

Satellite broadcasting in the Middle East and North Africa will soon be gaining powerful new broadcasting resources following the order by Eutelsat of a new satellite from Thales Alenia Space.

Called EUTELSAT 8 West B, the high-capacity spacecraft will be launched in 2015 to 8° West, joining satellites already operated at the adjacent 7° West position by Eutelsat and the Egyptian satellite company, Nilesat.

The EUTELSAT 8 West B satellite will be equipped with 40 operational Ku-band transponders designed primarily to serve DTH markets in North Africa and the Middle East.

It will also introduce a C-band mission to 8° West, with 10 operational transponders connected to footprints covering the African continent and reaching west to South America.

With a rapidly growing audience and channel line-up, the 7/8° West video neighbourhood is one of the most dynamic in the global satellite TV market.

Over 30 million homes in North Africa and the Middle East are already equipped for DTH reception of more than 800 Arabic and international channels broadcast at this position by Eutelsat and Nilesat.

Love the way satlaunch take the Eutelsat pictures & put their logo over them :D

Interesting sidelobe on the Mena footprint over Paris, with me right on the western edge.....unless the ink ran...LOL

Interesting to see how far the official MENA beam extends towards the top of Spain. Further than the 'official' footprint for Eutelsat 7West A. So we maybe will get to see this in the UK?? Just a thought.. Anyone else any thoughts??

MBC will probably be on the new MENA beam that extends to Central & Northern France + Belgium + South Netherlands + London + The South East +The East of England via another designer transponder footprint :)

That's good news for me. currently don't have any signal of the steerable frequencies in 8w here.

EUTELSAT 8 West B satellite in final stretch of manufacturing.

New satellite for Middle East and North Africa broadcast markets to host new advanced features

Dubai Paris, 9 March 2015 – The EUTELSAT 8 West B satellite of Eutelsat Communications (NYSE Euronext Paris: ETL) is in the final stretch of manufacturing and on track for launch by an Ariane 5 rocket in mid-2015. The 5.8 tonne satellite has finished launch environment tests and is now going through a final round of payload performance checks at Thales Alenia Space’s factory in Cannes.

EUTELSAT 8 West 8 will be launched to the 7/8° West neighbourhood selected by over 1,000 TV channels to reach into an unmatched audience of 52 million homes. Eutelsat and Nilesat have progressively built a comprehensive broadcast infrastructure at this position, comprising satellites designed for Direct-to-Home reception in a vast footprint stretching from Morocco to the Gulf. Both operators have steadily brought new capacity on line to meet thriving demand for digital channels and the acceleration of High Definition Television. The next phase of expansion at the most popular neighbourhood in the Middle East and North Africa comes with EUTELSAT 8 West B.

In addition to delivering increased Ku-band capacity for the MENA region and a pan-African payload in C-band, EUTELSAT 8 West B will host a new generation of advanced functions that will raise the bar of performance, flexibility and signal security. The new functions are focused on delivering three main benefits:

Mitigating the effects of interference by increasing control over uplink frequencies to a satellite;

Increasing the number of active channels by optimising a satellite payload’s use of the electrical power generated by its solar panels;

Expanding options for repositioning satellites with frequency agile command receivers.

Eutelsat 8 West B -  All-electric orbit raising.webp

Interesting Info :
All-electric orbit raising (~8 months)

Eutelsat 8 West B is supposed to enter full commercial service during the early hours of the 1st of october , replacing the old birds Eutelsat 8 West A & Eutelsat 8 West C .

Looks like 8 west B is in service now, and receivable in the UK! Getting signals on the following frequencies:
10972V 27500 3/4 QPSK 6.1dB
10972H 27500 5/6 QPSK 5.6dB
11013H 27500 5/6 QPSK 5.6dB
11054H 17000 2/3 8PSK 9.0dB
11096H 27500 5/6 QPSK 6.1dB
11137H 27500 5/6 QPSK 6.1dB
11179H 27500 5/6 QPSK 5.7dB

Maybe more, not checked all frequencies yet. Looks like all the frequencies from the steerable beam of 8 west C that was previously unreceivable here have switched over.

Feeds much stronger from 8 west with the all new Eutelsat 8 west B
