Evans pays £5m for classic Ferrari

Disc jockey Chris Evans has spent more than £5 million on a Ferrari, it was revealed.

The star bought a 1961 250 GT SWB California Spyder once owned by Hollywood actor James Coburn at a car auction in Italy.

Evans splashed out his cash on Sunday night at RM Auctions' second annual "Ferrari Leggenda e Passione" event in Maranello.

The star, who is well known for his admiration of the famous marque, was accompanied by his wife, golf pro and writer Natasha Shishmanian.

The auction house said he made a successful bid of 7,040,000 euros (£5,089,280), including buyer's premium, for the car, which will take pride of place in his collection.

Evans paid twice the estimated price for the car (3,400,000-3,800,000 euros).

He was quoted as saying afterwards: "I love it, it's great."

"I didn't expect it to go for that price, but I'm fine, absolutely calm. I've just had a Guinness."

Coburn sold the car in 1987 and it has had a number of private owners since.
