I use what ever i found in the back of the van before i left my last job :D

I normally use crimp connectors, unless it needs to be waterproof when i use compression connectors. I stay away from screw on connectors.

In simple terms; It's all about how well the cable is terminated to minimise standing waves not really the connector quality.

Sorry, it must be my English.
What is the difference between crimp and compression conncetors? I thought they were the same.
Screw-on is easy to understand for me but I don't get the difference between those two.

Compression is a more recent technology.
Crimp deforms the rear metal part of the plug around the cable/shielding.
Compression plunges the rear part towards the front, forcing the side walls to press against the shielding.
Compression plugs often have integrated o-rings making the connector water-resistant (water-tight would be stretching it).
Compression seems easier to use, as all deformation is integrated into the plug. You literally un-isolate, and put the plug on, compress, and you're done. As the connectors have a more complex design, they also tend to have a higher price-point.

Thanks, st1.
So crimp connectors are those you need a special tool for and compression connectors are self-compressing, if I may say so?

Both comes most popularly in versions where you need special tools, but the compression also come in no-tools versions (often at a slight higher price).

Compression looks interesting.

If I were to buy something like:
Code:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/10-x-F-Compression-Plugs-for-WF100-Satellite-Aerial-Coax-Cable-by-Cabelcon-/331232565859?pt=UK_Sound_Vision_Other&hash=item4d1effda63
Is any special tool needed?
Thanks

Yes, you need at least a compression tool (1).
But there are many other tools than can be of help, including
(2) cable stripping tool
(3) connector holder (to ensure absolute grip)
(4) cable holder (to ensure absolute grip)

I have the TRIAX Compression Tool 100 Size. It has attachments for several compression types.

does this work with other makes of connector? when i look around theres lots of similar tools about, some have measurements on them ie 19.3 or 20.5 i'm thinking of using triax connectors because of the o ring and the triax tool so its right, but would like the option to use other makes if possible.

The Triax tool does most connectors, yes Robinson74, no tool required for those, but they don't have an O ring, so ideally use self amalgamating tape if the LNB doesn't have a pull down cover and even then probably worthwhile.
