1) Theres an easy way to try FreesatfromSky. Pull your subscription card out the Sky box and have a look at what channels are left. If you cancel Sky you will get these plus a handful of extra ones that are free but "soft encrypted" (require a ftv card or cancelled subscription card to view).

2) There are quite a few news channels broadcasting in English but if you want general entertainment, sports or movie channels then you would probably need to subscribe to a foreign tv service

3) Loads available - and most of them are encrypted so you would need an alternative subscription!

4) Depends what you wanted to watch.

5) See 4.

Hi and welcome to the forum.

If you want to go for Freesat, then simply use what you have now after cancelling your subscription, if you are looking to watch European services, then you will need a new receiver and a motorised or multi LNB set up.

Not a vast amount of interest in English, unless you are prepared legitimately to subscribe to a package, probably no cheaper than Sky, or opt for card sharing, but even with that option, you need to bring a subscription card to the party. No such thing as a free lunch.

I counted around 380 channels available in English the last time I scanned with the motorised system

True that some of them were subtitled in Arabic/Slovenian/Urdu/unrecognised, but they were English.

To the o/p, go spend what you would have done in a year of subscribership on your old kit, then choose the card you might want with what the cash you might have received for Christmas. The kit outdoors will continue working for some five years regardless, as long as you employ someone trustworthy.
