Firefox (21) issues

Is anyone else having this (these) problems ?

I can look at this site, but when I sign in to reply/edit, I cannot go past the name/password window.

If I close the browser and reopen, a message says 'another instance of Firefox is still running, close this or shut down the PC' or words to that effect.

I can see firefox.exe in the task manager window but cannot close it down there and have to shut down the machine fully.

(currently using IE8 to post this, but it's much slower than the Mozilla browser)
 
Firefox 21 responds normally for me, CH. I'm using it in Win 7 and in Mint without issue.

On the rare occasion I get the ".... is already running" warning, killing the redundant process has always worked >>> but I can't figure out why it's not working that way for you in Windows Task Manager/Processes. Odd.
 
Uninstall + Reinstall tends to sort out most seemingly unresolvable Firefox problems >> You can elect to keep everything but the Browser core, so it's not a nightmare job.
 
Are you sure I can keep the bookmarks as there are hundreds of them.

Yes, when when you go to Add/Remove Programmes (sic), clicking Uninstall Firefox brings you up a procedure that asks exactly what you want to do about your Preferences etc.

But, if you are in any doubt whatsoever, then go to "Show All Bookmarks" >> Import + Backup >> Export to HTML and make a backup file on your PC or a USB stick.

If you want to be even more sure, install MozBackup first and run that - it'll retain everything you choose from your current Profile and will let you restore it easily after Firefox is reinstalled.



BTW, re-reading your OP, it could be a Cookie issue since you cannot get past the login screen on this site: Clear your Cookies and try again, before tackling the Firefox re-install.
 
Ah, too late. Deleted and reinstalled

Seems to be OK now, thanks for the advice.

Hmmm, I may have spoken too soon.

Whilst Firefox appears to be behaving, Outlook Express is now playing up. Firefox is not the default browser but if I now try to use a link from an email - opening up in IE8 - OE hangs.

This may be unrelated of course, but I am of suspicious mind.
 
Did you manage to keep your bookmarks?

Firefox doesn't integrate in any way with Mail Clients per se, so if there is a common link in the issues you mentioned it probably lies in some general crapness (inadvertently altered setting, corruption, virus thingy, whatever) deep within.

Try setting Firefox as default, see if OE links open up ok in it. Then revert to IE as default to see if all the relevant associations have corrected themselves.

If all else fails, how about a System Restore to a couple of days ago?
 
If you have tried to kill it in task manager and it hasnt closed have a look for a dumprep entry and kill that one. (If you have tried several times there will be several entries). That ALWAYS kills FF when it hangs up on my somewhat antiquated desktop at home
 
PS, I sorted a problem out on a Windoze 8 machine this afternoon (against my better judgement!) and I cannot get on with Win 8 at all.

Who nicked the Start Button? (I know it's coming back soon)

Where is everything?

Bookmarks are fine (actually Firefox is probably OK as it is faster than before)

Checked for dumrep files in the task manager and there are none.

Will try defaulting Firefox when I get back to the house.
 
Set Firefox to default and links within OE open up fine

I don't want to set IE back to default until posting this, as it might hang.

If the problem does persist, is there anything that might have affected two totally different browsers in one go ? I have scanned with Security Essentials and AVG 2013, nadda flags.
 
I can't think of anything sinister - probably just a glitch (Ah, the joys of being specific!)

I'd just reset IE as Default now and trust that the Associations have sorted themselves out.


PS: You shouldn't have both MSSE and AVG installed as they tend not to tolerate each other and can create conflicts. One or the other, but not both - problem is you can't easily disable one in favour of the other as both packages like to be "cock of the walk" . I recommend you completely uninstall one of them (Personally, MSSE is the one I'd keep).

Tried just now, and OE still hangs, no warnings, nothing in system manager to remove fault, leavig switching off the only option.

Will try reinstalling IE later tonight, just in case.

And there appears to be no way of removing IE (at least not in the programme itself, ccleaner or ASC Uninstaller).

Now on the laptop while I have a long think.
 
I haven't used IE for donkey's years, but IIRC there is a Repair option in the Uninstall Programmes dialogue. However, I suspect you will be able to resolve it without resorting to this (See Edit below).

To be frank, these inexplicable irritations that can take ages to resolve are key amongst the reasons why I (and a great many others) have largely abandoned Windows.

However, looking at the here and now, is there any reason why you cannot use Firefox as your default Browser anyway?



Edit: A quick Google (Other Search Engines are available) of "OE links won't open in IE" gives many useful results showing you are by no means aloon, and giving solutions.

As for Outlook Express, I wouldn't trust that either, I think it was replaced many moons ago with something else that came along with the Windows Live stuff, personally I've been using Outlook 2003 (not the express version, of course) for the past several years, it still is a bit of a pain to work with, but when it works it's fairly reasonable, better than webmail interfaeces though (yeah, I know I spelled that wrong, but most of those webmail things are just a pile of it anyway!!!)... :lol:

And of course there's the email client from Mozilla that could be used, Thunderbird, which I'm sure would happily open links without bother in a browser of your choice... :lol:
