Why are you using such an out of date Distro?

My Mint is 18.2 !

Because it is supported until 2019 and is very stable. Does everything I need it to do, If it aint broke......I like the 5 year support, why work harder?

The easy way to tweak Firefox 57
Open menu top right hand side (Left hand mouse click)
Click on Customise (Left hand mouse click)

Working just fine here on Windows 10 professional.

One of the best tweaks I've made is to remove the new style Bookmarks icon and instead use the one that looks like a star on a tray and restores the feature whereby hovering over a Bookmarks Folder shows the contents.

Seeing what a memory hog older FF's had become Im actually quite impressed with the new iteration. On my 10+ year old desktop opening more than a couple of tabs would cause the cooling fan to whine as the processor struggled under the memory load.

That hasnt happened at all under the version 57 even with half a dozen tabs open.

Having major problems with FF57 on Win 8.1 (core i3 laptop- very "laggy" and often unresponsive. have updated all addons I can find and disabled a couple, I have run a malware check. On FF56 I had no problem running with 12 or more tabs open.

Any ideas?

Can I uninstall and reinstall FF56 - any link for download?

At present am using IE10 with a lot less problems.

Wimp.

I currently have 20 tabs spread over 4 windows open at the moment. That's by no means the most I've had open although I have to admit that performance does tend to slow down a bit with lots of disc thrashing going on. Maybe time for 16GB of memory?

'Fraid so. I have toyed with fitting an SSD although I fear it would not be a cheap move. I've used up nearly half of my 1TB drive so far and would need a large one (oo-err missus).

At the risk of skewering this thread off course another speed up possibility is to replace the middle of the road processor with one more towards the top of the range. I do need to be sure that the processor in my laptop isn't soldered to the motherboard though.

Somewhere in England (possibly?)!
"Cheapish" SSD for the boot/OS drive and then use your old 1TB drive for data?

That's sort of what I have done = "500GB" Evo 850 for the boot/OS partition with a 2nd partition for most of the apps, and then a new hybrid 1TB drive (in a caddy in the old DVD slot) with 3x partitions for data because the old one was 5yrs old and I didn't trust it anymore after a meltdown during the cloning exercise. Total cost (apart from the cost and anguish of the complete meltdown of the existing 1TB drive) was around £220.

I now have a much faster laptop with 1.5TB of storage.
