My Satellite Setup
Freesat enabled TV with no satellite

Heya, firstly if a thread has been done like this before please knock in the link below and i'll be a happy chap!

(p.s. also sorry!)

First time trying to install a dish so wanted to check i'm going the right way.

I've got a Panasonic HDTV with FreeSat inside,
I guess i need;
- a 56cm dish (ebay old sky one with mounts)
- two F-connectors
- and a long coaxial cable to run in into the house
(is that all i need?)

I've read around a bit and for installation i plug everything in, turn the power on, point it at the Eurobird 1 using a spirit level, compass and protractor...

All i'm asking is if all the stuff above is sort of correct.

Any feedback would be great and massivly appreciated

As you are in London a Sky mini dish will suffice, for Astra 2, 28.2E, but if you're happy with a 60 cm dish then use that.
I wouldn't advise using general coax cable, have a look at getting some better quality cable, like CT 100, and don't forget to protect the connections against the weather.
So long as you have a clear line of sight to Astra 2 then you can mount the dish where you like.
What will be the approximate length of the cable run, from the dish to the television?

Yes, it is sort of correct, but you won't be able to lock onto a satellite using a compass and a spirit level. You will need a way of measuring the signal level whilst adjusting the dish. Not fond of them myself, but they're cheap, but a cheapo satfinder should suffice if you persevere.
 
You can use the dishpointer tool on this site to approximately point in the right direction, http://www.satellites.co.uk/forums/dishpointer.php then find the satellite using the signal strength and quality readings on your TV.

The elevation of the dish can be set approximately also, just set the dish face on near vertical, but leaning back a couple of degrees.
 
I just bought a Panasonic with built in freesat, fixed up a Screwfix 60cm dish kit using the sat finder, turned on the TV freesat tuning page & the wife watched the onscreen signal strength bar while I fiddled with the dish. the signal finder showed 100% strong signal strength but I couldn't get the signal quality more than 50% on TV screen no matter how I slightly adjusted the dish until I swiveled the transponder right over & the missus shouted the yellow signal bar has gone green & is right across at 10, had a cracking good picture since with most of the channels showing 10 for quality & strength, just a few weird overseas ones where it drops back but still remains mostly green.

It is disabled for you at the moment, but at some point it will be enabled automatically.
