If you are suffering from crashing then it could be down to over heating.

What you need is an old usb printer cable and PC fan.

Cut the usb cable, to reveal some silver cables, remove these as there not needed.

We only require the red and black power cables, the other two are used for data, and not needed.

Connect the fan`s red and black power cables to the usb lead and insulate so that no metal wire`s are showing.

The usb port is located under the HDD bay. I attached the fan to the HDD holder with cable ties

Hopefully this should stop your 800 from over heating and crashing.

You should not really have to do this on a £400 box!!!

Is there room between the hard drive holder and the motherboard to accommodate the fan rather than have it sitting where the drive should be? It seems a shame to have such an expensive box with no possibility to fit a harddrive (When the fan is fitted).

As you say "You should not really have to do this on a £400 box!!!"

No as the card reader lives there!

But if you wanted to fit an internal HDD you could fit a smaller fan towards the back and remove the external sata connection, to make room.;)

Or there`s the external HDD option:)

There really isnt allot of room in there, I dont know why dream made it so small:confused

The fan has cooled my 800 down and has not crashed yet!

Just thinking, you could go to all this trouble and still not resolve your crashing issues. Would it not be more beneficial to plug a drive into the SATA port and record a crash log. Then email this to the support team who provided the image. Until you do this you will never find out what is causing a problem and continue to speculate rather than deal with facts. Just a thought.

If he has the same image after installing the fan, and it does not crash anymore then there is a good chance it is due to overheating. I suppose you could do a test, i.e. run the box for a week with the fan, see how many times it crashes, and then disconnect the fan and try again.
Heat dissipation IS a big problems with tightly packed electronic devices - same problem for instance with the XBox.
Of course it could be software related, but my feeling is that it's heat.

how noicy is this fan?
not all dm 800 affected by this hot temperature, only the first modells, and how it looks the clone also!

the heat temperature, during operation, depents,on the software version ,of the bootlaoder, that hasbeen installed, when its too old box will get hoter, then on a newer bootloader verion!
my one,is a not hot one,i dont need any fan!

After installing the fan, I have not had any crashing, when I did, I never had the log crash screen the 800 just used to die on me.

The box is only 3 month`s old I have the paypal transaction.

You can only hear the fan if the room is quiet.

Will check for you pedro

with the fan always being on , even in standby - i wonder if there is any risk from the fan burning out because of it being in constant use )(-red

are there similar devices that are always running fans inside them?

i know pc's have them but they are switched off or when in standby the fans stop running

cheers

If this is a real problem, then I would add a switch which is accessible from the back panel. Could mean drilling a hole in the case cover or just let it hang out.
The only snag is to remember to switch the fan on when you the receiver is on.

I read that HD channels caused overheating. Perhaps image developers should consider that problem in future issues. I hope that we wont need to mess around with our valuable receivers!

The overheating was more or less fixed with the release of bootloader 62. We are now upto bootloader 70. My box is rock solid now on Blackhole 07 and has not crashed once since installation.

I can thoroughly recommend purchasing of a Laptop PC Cool Pad and placing in under the Dreambox. I have a DM500S and a DM800 and I purchased two PC laptop cool pads. The power is from the USB port of the DM800 however i recently purchased a mains adaptor 220v to 5v and now using that to power the both cool pads. The one that I purchased has a double USB port on the side so that you do not loose one of your USB ports from the DM800 if thats the way you power yours.

My average HDD temperature is around 42-45 Deg C. I'm running Nabilosat BH v 0.7.

I bought my 800 about 6 months ago and it hasn't crashed yet. I'm running Gemini image and have 320GB hard disc in it.
How do I find out what version bootloader I'm running?

Switch your dreambox off and then restart and keep the button on the front of the box pressed until you see the ip address appear on the lcd. Type this into your web browser. On the page that opens you can choose to update firmware or view system details, this is the one you want. It will tell you all about your 800, even the day it was built I think.

Hello Tom,
Wont this erase the image in flash as it does when you do this with the DM600?

Hi mate, no it only erases if you choose to upgrade. If you just want a look at the info choose that option then when your finished just close the browser and then reboot the box. Boots as usual
