Fixed WAN IP Address

I've just been given a Fixed WAN IP Address from bulldog does this mean i can access files on my main PC from a remote location over the internet ? If so how would i setup something like this up ? I know i'd need to configure Zone Alarm to allow an incoming connection but how do i make sure only I can access the files ?

Yes, it does, sorry no idea how you can do it on a PC - now if you had a Mac that's different.
 
Should be fairly straightforward Chris, are you using a router or modem?
 
I'm using a Zoom X5 which is a modem / Router in one unit and i'm running Zone Alarm.

Obviously first you need to set up your router by using the access software and set up a remote access route by choosing the remote access section and describing the protocol you intend using, also a name and password. Then from the PC you are using to access remotely over the web go to start, connect to, show all connections, under network tasks top left create new connections. Then put in your name and password and the protocol that will be used. Oh just thought are you using XP Chris???? As if you are there is a setting to set up remote operation but I must confess I have never used it.

 
I think that you will also need to make a static route to your PC, so you will need to give it a fixed IP as well within the LAN.

Thanks for the help, i'm not in front of the main PC that i want to connect to at the moment will be back tomorrow so will have a play then. How secure is this ? any risks involved ?

Always risks, but as long as you make the access name and password complex, you should be able to do it, failing that, you could use VPN software, but it isn't free.
 
yo'll need something like RealVNC, it's free and it's secure, unlike pcanywhere, people will scan the net for an "open" connection. with realvnc, you'll need "server" installed on the pc you want to access, set username and password, tell zonealarm to accept connection for realvnc and tell your router to accept realvnc as well

But realVNC has its limitations e.g. you cannot transfer files with PCanywhere you can....don't get me wrong I am not knocking VNC but it has it's limitations. Real VNC is free.....
