Freesat or not Freesat?

My Satellite Setup
French Freesat decoder hooked to whatever dish they put on the roof of the apartment.
My Location
Haute Savoie, France
Three of us in an appartment block in Haute Savoie got together and had a dish installed by a local installer to allow us to get UK TV, the idea being that we would get Freesat.
What we are getting is only some of the UK TV programmes, notably no BBC 2, BBC 24 and no children's programmes. The decoder (bought locally Triax TSR 1000C), tells us that it is picking these channels up from Astra 2ABD. It also lists: Hot Bird, Astra, Turksat 1C, Atlantic and Hispasat 1C-1D but does not seem to tune to anything on any of these.
Has our local man got the dish pointing at the wrong satellite? If so which satallite should it be looking at?
I am new to this game, so keep it simple please!

You're on the correct Satellite, but the dish may be too small.

My geography is not too hot re: France!

Most of France a 60 or 80cm Dish should do, but some areas require a fair bit bigger.

The thing is, the Satellite position for UK TV actually has four Satellites, with the Channels being shared between them.

Most of the good Free stuff eg BBC1,2,3,4, ITV1, 2,3,4 etc is on a Satellite that is focussed to a large extent on the UK, in order to prevent them being easily received in areas not "entitled".

The stuff you do get is going to be from Astra 2A, 2B and Eurobird 1

The stuff you're not getting is from Astra 2D.

The other possibility is that the Receiver is not set up correctly to control the LNB (Lumpy thing on the end of the dish arm) as not only do Channels differ by Satellite but also in technical parameters such as Polarisation and whether they are in Low Band or High Band.

PS You won't get Channels from the other Satellites listed.
 
I've just found out you are sort of Ski territory ish, and the Footprint suggest you will need an 80cm or 1m or even slightly bigger dish to get the missing Channels.
 
80cm should be fine. I use this size down in the Vaucluse and it gives a reasonable margin for rain fade. A 60cm here doesn't get 2D so, if youhave this size, that may explain the problem.

I had a look at where you are and it is only about 150 miles SW from where we are, so you are probably right. I don't actually know what size the dish is (very naive we just trusted the local satellite man). The quote just says "parabole"! From memory it is probably smaller than the existing one that presumably picks up the French TV, so I guess that should have rung alarm bells.
We are back out at the end of next week so I'll go in to see them and ask them if they think a bigger dish would be the answer and if so at what cost!

In the meantime you should be able to get pop,tiny pop,Kix! and Popgirl, they are on Eurobird 1, 11642V 27500 2/3, if its not on the EPG (which I don't think it is), you'll have to manual tune.
 
It might be worth checking that the frequencies of the missing channels are in your receiver's memory. Its list could be incomplete! On my last visit to some friends in Le Bugue (Dordogne) I amazed them by "finding" Film 4 and the correct BBC One region for them. Their locally supplied décodeur only had a limited, or perhaps out of date list of transponder frequencies for Astra 2.
