Freesat - Sound Lag

Now my new toy is working fine and connected to the TV using a HDMI cable. I thought it would be a good idea to connect the audi output of the Humax to my surround sound (5+1) speakers.

The sound is not coordinated with the TV. It looks and sounds now like a cheap chinese movie. What is causing the lag and more importantly how do I rectify it?

Not noticed and sound lag on my Technomate HD through the TV on Freesat channels.

Does it do it with the TV alone, i.e not going through the surround sound unit?
 
Can you take the sound from the TV?

I agree Rolf the sound input for the surround sound system should come from the TV
 
Nevertheless, there is nothing within the Humax manual to confirm the audio outputs might have a noticeable delay compared to the picture delivery.
 
I can play the sound through the TV and the surround sound at the same time. The sound comin through the suround sound is about 1 second behind tht can hear on the TV. I connected the Humax to the surround sound using the AV cables and then the digital audio cable, but both the same. I am stumped.

When the TV signal is processed to compress its size for transmission the video component takes more time to process than the audio and there is always a slight, barely noticeable, lag between the two. There is also more delay intoduced in the receiver when it processes the complete signal back into separate video and audio.

The brain normally compensates but this can be seen if the camera position is behind the head of someone who is talking. It then becomes more obvious. You can see this quite a lot on the morning breakfast programmes.

If you've got a fancy TV set with lots of image enhancement then this also takes time and the lag between the two becomes too much. The TV will then have an audio output, as Rolf says, which will take into account the extra sound delay. Using this will be the best you can hope for unless you have a very expensive AV amplifier. These often have an adjustment for audio delay.
 
I have already plastered the cabling behind the wall. I will have a play to see what else I can do. I still need to connect my DVD player back up which I am presuming is done by getting a HDMI splitter.
 
Not sure what you intend to with an HDMI "splitter".

HDMI switches don't split an HD signal so that you can see the result on multiple TVs or a TV and a DVD recorder. There is an electronic handshaking that takes place between the two devices connected by the HDMI cable and if this is not correct then the TV will show a blank screen.

I think the first thing to do is connect a temporary lead from your TV's sound output to the amplifier rather than the Humx. If that cures your problem then at least you know what you're up against.
 
I have sorted the sound lag. There is a specific control on the Humax to either bring the sound forward or backwards. Thanks for the support.
 
Wish I'd seen this Thread earlier!

The Foxsat Lip Synch issue has been well known since launch and, as you've discovered, there is a feature available to adjust it.

For the benefit of the wider audience, the sequence is:

Menu > TV Setup > Lip-Synch

and an audio delay of up to 100mS can be applied (in 5 mS increments)
