60 cm dish Technomate 5200D Super USB

Hi guys, I am quite new to Freesat. I have a 60 cm dish aligned carefully on the Astra2/Eurobird cluster. I am siutated in Essex, UK near Chelmsford. I have a new Technomate 5200D Super USB satellite receiver. I have set everything up carefully, including setting up all the latest detailed parameters from LyngSat and flysat and KingOfSat. However I cannot receive signals from all of the stated transponders and as a result cannot receive for example Sky News, CNN International Europe, BBC News, BBC Parliament and BBC Alba. I have tuned my dish alignment specifically to attempt to maximize the signals from these relevant transponders, but with no improvement. (I have a clear line-of-sight from my dish to the satellite, with no trees or other obstacles in the way.) I also note that the actual transmissions differ from the parameters listed on LyngSat and flysat and KingOfSat, on an almost daily basis.

The following are the specific transponders from which I cannot receive signals:

11488 Vertical ? Signal strength 97% Quality 20% Eurobird 1, Steerable
11720 Horizontal 29500 Signal strength 97% Quality 20% Astra 2A, South 0

Can anyone suggest what my problem might be please? All of the other transponders and channels I am receiving correctly. As I have said my receiver is a brand new one, so is it possible that the fault could be in the receiver? I am lost for a solution and would be most grateful if anyone could suggest what this problem is due to. Thanks.

They are all the High Band Transponders, so you either have a faulty LNB or, more likely, incorrect LNB settings in your Receiver.

The LNB settings should be Universal, Universal 1, or Universal 9750/10600 (All those are the same, but just called different things depending upon the Receiver).

You are missing the 22KHz Band Switching Tone that should be set by default when you select Universal.

With exception to the first, which is a dead Tp, they are all High band transponders [as mentioned]. Is the 60cm new or an old analogue dish realigned?. If the latter then that would explain why, owing to a 9750 only LNb. If not then check the LNb configuration on the receiver.

You wont get the Nigeria frequencies - they are firing into western Africa on a spotbeam and are impossible here in the UK.

The frequencies with symbol rate 29500 are high definition frequencies and need HD kit to receive, and I dont think yours is. So you can scratch those off the list as well.

Thanks for your responses guys. Sayelliteman, thanks for pointing out that the first is a dead TP. Presumably it is just unused by any channel at present? My 60 cm dish is one which existed when I moved in 4 years ago, but was originally set to Astra 1 by the previous occupant when I moved in. I re-aligned it to the Astra 2/Eurobird 1 cluster when I purchased the Technomate receiver a week ago. As I also explained, when I found that I could not receive some TPs I tried re-aligning my dish again many times specifically at the frequencies of the transponders I could not receive, but this did not improve things at all.

My LNB is evidently a Universal one since I can receive many highband (27500) channels, such as 1222 Vertical to 11469 Horizontal, and 11508 Horizontal to 11681 Vertical on Eurobird 1. I also can receive 12070 Horizontal (Astra 2A, North 0), 12110 Horizontal (Astra 2B, South 0), 12148 Horizontal (Astra 2A, North 0), 12188 Horizontal (Astra 2A South), 12285 Vertical (Astra 2A, South) and 12523 Vertical (Eurobird 1), which are all highband transmissions. The fact that I can receive all TP transmissions from Astra 2D, and some from 2A and 2B including highband ones seems to indicate that I am receiving both the Astra 2 North and South beams and Eurobird 1 without restriction. I seems that it is just certain frequencies which I cannot receive? The lowband/highband switching must therefore be working properly with the 22 kHz signal since some examples of TP signals received satisfactorily include both lowband transmissions on Astra 2D and highband transmissions on Eurobird 1, Astra 2A and Astra 2B. Polarization switching must be working since examples such as 11307 Horizontal and 11307 Vertical are received satisfactorily with good signal quality.

Tivu, thanks for your suggestion, but I have checked the settings in the receiver again and they are correct. The 22 kHz switching is set on auto and thus seems to work OK. Surely the fault cannot be in the LNB if I am able to receive both highband and lowband signals for some channels, and the polarity switching is working correctly? It is this which makes me suspect that the fault might be in the receiver? The only way perhaps to try to determine that is to try my receiver on a neighbour's dish?

Analoguesat, thanks for the data concerning the Nigeria TPs. I had not seen that anywhere and did not realise that those were transmitted as a spotbeam. You are correct concerning the HD signals, so I have now deleted those from the receiver list.

So it seems more and more puzzling to me. Could it be something to do with the LNB skew setting? I now suspect the receiver as the most likely culprit if it is not LNB skew.

Sorry, I mistyped some of the info there about highband TPs which I can receive. It should have read "...My LNB is evidently a Universal one since I can receive many highband (27500) channels, such as 11222 Horizontal to 11469 Horizontal, and 11508 Horizontal to 11681 Vertical on Eurobird 1. I also can receive 12070 Horizontal (Astra 2A, North 0), 12110 Horizontal (Astra 2B, South 0), 12148 Horizontal (Astra 2A, North 0), 12188 Horizontal (Astra 2A South), 12285 Vertical (Astra 2A, South), 12523 Vertical (Eurobird 1) and 12560 Vertical which are all highband transmissions."

The frequencies under 11700 are receivable on low band, the few you appear to be receiving on high band, are probably low band frequencies retranslated.

If you can receive 12523 V, you should be receiving the following channels:

TV Shop UK
CBS Reality
Rocks & Co.
Record Internacional Europa
Sangat TV
JML Home & DIY
Gem Collector (20-01)
Brit Asia TV
Sunrise TV
Gems TV 1
Deya Broadcasting Network
Thane Stop and Shop 5
Rád

If you are receiving 12523 H, then these channels:

Daystar TV
BEN
EWTN UK
Movies4Men +1
Bluebird TV 954
Madani Channel
Music India
Voxafrica Africa
Ahlebait TV
OH TV

Some pictures of the LNB would help.

I'd bet your house it's not a Universal LNB: Rolf's explanation is spot on.

Cheap as chips to change it.

Can you take a close up of the LNb or better still read off what it says on it [if it hasn't faded].

Hi Rolfw, Tivu and Satelliteman, I think that Rolfw has hit it. Either the receiver is not actually switching to hi band or the LNB has developed a fault. What I did not mention is that I have another satellite dish also which is stated on the label to be a Sky digital one. The symptoms are the same with that. I did not think that low band frequencies could be retranslated. So that is what fooled me, since it seemed that I was receiving those TP transmissions according to the signals recorded on the receiver, whereas I was not!

So thanks for all your help. I will check my receiver on a neighbour's dish and if that is OK I will change my LNBs. I will let you know the outcome later. It may in any case be helpful to others. So thanks for all your help so far.

Doug

Good luck and thanks for updating us.
